Your favorite 80s Baseball set??

I was a fan of the 84 Topps set for a while, but I have started to like the 83 Topps from cards I have seen on Ebay. I know a lot of members like the 84 Donruss set. What set do you like??

Since none of 'em seem to be worth a whole lot, I'll go with the sentimental fave: 87 Topps. Reminds me of when I was a kid. The guy who does the basball card blog had a real nice write up on this set recently.

For best photography and crisp pics, '83 Topps would be the best.

For sentimental reasons, '81 Topps is my favorite.

For investment purposes - none, as of now.

Like the others, my favorite set of the 80s is the 1983 Topps set. Coming in on a close second though would be 1988 Fleer or Score. The 88 Fleer set just looks cool to me, but the 88 Score set has awesome photography and interesting writeups on most of the players.

I've always liked the '88 fleer... and the '88 Donruss. It would be nearly impossible to attempt a decently graded set of that Donruss though...

I realize they're "junk" sets in junk years... but I've always been fond of'em. (Somebody's gotta give'em some love, right?)

Even though I have to add the same line everyone else is (worthless), when the 1987 Topps came out a half gallon of milk used to cost me 5.00 since I would grab a handful of packs everytime to take care of the change. The boarders reminded me of the 62's and 87 seemed to rejuvenate and help recharge the hobby. Couldnt have cared less what was in the packs. It just helped to recharge the kid in me.......

1982 Topps Blackless and 1984 Topps Encased. Off beat variation/proof sets, but with upward potential since much scarcer than the regular sets for those years.

I go back and forth on this. 81 topps was the first year I bought a considerable amount and really took an interest in cards, so that gets my sentimental vote. 85 Donruss will always have a special place in my heart too.

I'm with MantleMarisFordBerra on this one.

1987 Topps gets more of a bashing (appearance-wise) than any other 80s topps set.....which i can understand.
BUT I will always remembering opening my very first pack the first day they hit the shelves. The look of the cards made me remember......
Well, that, and I got that great looking Future Star Bo Jackson in my first pack and was VERY excited.
One week ago I bought a few unopened '87 topps packs to bring me back to that day. Sure enough, the first pack i opened had a Future Star by the name of Bo Jackson....what are the odds?

got heavily into collecting in '87 --- but have to tip my nod to the '84 Donruss. Great photography and an absolutely timeless design. I like it so much, I'm now putting together a high grade set. They look great when they're well-centered.

I do agree that 87 Topps does get some unjust bashing. I have always liked Topps sets that included the team logo on the front of the card. My issue is that there are a lot of bad photos in the 87 set. What was up with Topps and their photography, 83 seems like a great year, but even in 84 there are some bad photos in the set??

1987 Topps... one of my first sets collected and I like the wood borders.

1986 Topps...another first set collected and I like the look of them as well as the red team color box bottom variation.

I have started lately to really get into the Donruss issues of the mid to late 80's. Started A reg set under 86, Love the blue borders and photography. Like the 87 Topps woodies as well.

i like the 88 and 89 topps cards...not only because i have so many of them, but i like the basic designs. these two sets define 80's card collecting for me.

Im also a fan of the 89 upperdeck cards. the 86 topps also some appeal.

The one thing that I do not like about the 83 Topps is that because of the placement of the players name and team name the main photo seems small to me. Compare an 83 with an 82.

I have a soft spot for the 1989 Fleer set. I had gotten out of collecting during my high school years and forgot how much I loved it. One day my girlfriend brought me home a suprise, an 89 Fleer factory set. I sat down and opened that puppy up and sorted the cards. Right then the collecting bug bit me again and I have not let up since.

Love that '83 Ripken card. Big fan of those orange jerseys.

I have always liked the run of sets that Fleer put out from '83 to '88. They're all somewhat similar, but there are enough differences to make it interesting, kind of like the four Philadephia football set designs.

Fleer issue: 1. 1987 2. 1988 3. 1986
Donruss: 1. 1985 2. 1986 3. 1981 (because they're so bad) --- I don't understand the eye appeal of 1984 set (too many in your face close-up shots for me)

1990 Leaf is probably the best set in the last 25 years from a standard card issue.

My second life in bbc collecting started in '81. I like all but the '82 and '83 years of the Donruss sets. Fleer just never caught my fancy and, being a college student with a young family, I had to limit my purchases. Of the Topps sets, I'd probably have to pick the '83 set, too, because it reminded me of the '63T set with the round design at the bottom. Didn't Topps design the cards that way to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the '63 set? It seems like I remember reading that in SCD.

Unfortunately, the '80s set I may have disliked the most was the '84 Fleer because of the gimmick shots (Glen Hubbard w/snake; Jay Johnstone w/umbrella hat; etc.). As a result, I didn't buy the '84 Fleer Update set with the Kirby & Roger RCs!!

I'm obviously a big fan of the '84 Donruss set, but I also love the '85, '86 & '87 issues of Donruss as well. For Topps, I really enjoy the '80, '83 & '87 issues. For Fleer, I like the '84, '85 & '87 issues.

Mid 80's, although overproduced, had some decent designs and good players at the time.

I still like the loveable loser... '81 Donruss! I was 13 years old, not into girls or cars yet so I bought a TON of boxes of cards that year. I like '81 F and T also but D remains my favorite because it's just sooooooooooooooooooooo bad. Actually '81 F was pretty bad too. Gosh what a year!
