Grade opinions - Amanda's 3 cent silver, round 2

robertprrobertpr Posts: 6,862 ✭✭✭
In the original thread the guesses were wild and varied. Mark Feld viewed and showed the coin to some folks "in the know" and Mark stated his "final answer" was XF40. After viewing the coin in person, I agree. I have the coin in-hand now and have finished imaging it: my images, and Amanda's, are below. I have decided to make this a poll-style guess the grade and invite your comments below.

A world of difference between the images. I'm still in at VF35 or below with a possible BB at PCGS for cleaning. I could be blind but many XF coins show a little luster within the devices and I do not see any luster. The rim still concerns me but not nearly as much as the picture Amanda took.

Is the PCGS grading thing still on with this coin ? I want to give my money away....image

I'm with Fairlane on this one. I voted VF-30 because of the absence of luster and on the reverse I really don't like how much the rim runs into the stars.

Although I graded it XF40 in hand, it looks better than that to me in the imagesimage

I think the coin has been lightly cleaned, but doesn't necessarily look it in the images.

I agree the reverse has a few hairlines, but only a minimal number and they're very light. I do agree the coin may have been cleaned, however, to me it looks as though this may have occured possibly before the coin was worn from some circulation. I don't think the cleaning would affect the grade either way, it is so light.

As to the lustre, there is no cartwheel on the coin. The coin does have some sheen at certain angles (which can be seen in Amanda's images, mine were taken dead-on straight)

Amanda, I can't believe that after Robert was nice enough to image your coin for you, you called him "crooked".imageimage

Mark, it was in the Dansco when I took the picture. image And it was tilted.

    Quick question Amanda.
This is a perfect "collector coin". It is a circulated piece of US history. Why is it getting slabbed?
Is this getting slabbed as a learning tool for grading this series?

This type of coin should be enjoyed and looked at in a nice album (like it was), or even in a airtight, but why a slab?
I agree with some coins in slabs-take a high grade modern (like a coin Russ collects), or a high end monster( like Saintguru's coins), maybe TDN's collection- or even my 55 Lincoln DDO, but coins like this one are collectors coins. No disrespect meant Amanda, but why is this one going in? Once it is in a slab it won't fit your album anymore. I think this one should be an album coin and find one of these in high AU or MS for that slab collection.

I am not sure I got my thoughts across-- again- no disrespect Amanda, but this coin is a great collectors coin.

I, as opposed to what some have said to me in PM's, have no objection to slabs--I have many many coins in slabs, but I also have nice coins-like this one- in my hands on collections.

    Just my rambling thoughts....

So far as I know, Amanda has no plans to slab this coin. Amanda?

I'd like to have one in similar condition for my Dansco...just a quick question though...with the new pics it looks like there's some green stuff under the date and on the reverse near some of the stars...old PVC damage????

My vote? (add the two bux for a cup of coffee). VF-30. I'd like to see a little more detail on a 35
