Gum in Baseball Packs

Were there any yrs before they stopped putting gum in packs (1992) that Topps might have put out wax boxes with packs containing no gum? I got an unopened box of 1980 2 weeks ago and now after the fact I don't recall seeing gum in any of the packs. I didn't peel gum off the backs of any cards (like I did with the box of 1978 wax I had gotten earlier this year). I am going to go home and check the trash for the wrappers and see. Maybe I am just paranoid but was just checking to see if its possible some boxes had no gum. I have a box of 1979 wax sitting at home (they arrived today while at work) so I'll definitely be looking for that gum tonight.

Can't answer your question with 100% certainty, but I doubt there were boxes issued without gum in 1980. Steve Hart at BBCE may be able to answer for sure. How was the quality of the cards and the selection?

The only packs that I know of that didn't contain them during that run was the 1983 Michigan "test" packs which was a sealed mylar-like material - so no wax or gum stains.

Even those packs contained a stick of gum, though they were tamper proof because of the foil packaging.

Mike,
The gum seemed to be less of an issue on the packs I've opened maybe because of the packaging, I'm not sure. I feel bad that jjgoat may have been swindled on his purchase if there was no gum in the packs at all. A lot of dishonest sellers will buy boxes of 1988 Topps and use the gum in those packs to create their vintage "packs" to fool collectors. Can't say I've even heard of someone trying to sell off a resealed box with NO gum inside the packs, so hopefully he's mistaken.
BTW--Good to see you back, Mike. I appreciate the civility you bring to these boards.
