Woot! Now have 2 early British MS PL pieces!

I had sent the 1806 1d below back to NGC for review, after NEN said that it was in fact a prooflike MS, rather than a proof as NGC erroneously claimed. After review, NGC agrees and it's been reholdered as MS64 BN PL.

I suppose I could try and get something back on the grade guarantee, since if you go strictly by book values, the value of the coin has dropped, going from PF to MS, but frankly I'll bet the population of prooflike MS pieces is considerably smaller than the population of proofs...

  • Not the first time NGC has mis-attributed an item....

    I recently acquired a Peck 1752 , 1* & A , (F-260B) that was labeled Peck 1751 , 1 & A, (F-259)

Turns an R-18 into an R-19, so I'm not complaining....

    see scans...

Are Peck designations normally listed on NGC slabs, or only upon request?

I found out that NGC will not compensate for "mechanical" errors, which they consider this to be.

So let me get this straight: If NGC overgrades a 64 as a 65 and get called on it, they'll pay the difference, but if they are mistaken on proof vs. MS, they won't.

    1. Why?

    2. Wouldn't the latter be harder to F-up than the former (i.e., they're paying out on the option that's likely to occur more frequently)?

On the upside, I had NGC do a population check, and of all pennies 1800-1830, this piece is the only PL they have graded (of course who's to know if any of the other proofs they've graded are actually PL business strikes like this one?...)

  • I had a similar situatuation with a slab that had an 1866 dime in it.... it was actually an 1866-S with a very weak mint mark.....

They would not cover the mis-attribution... as you say, it was a clerical error, although the mm was not visible.... diagnostics proved it to be an S though....

There is a substantial difference in price, even in low grade, and I was out the money........
