Is this a sin?

I found 30,000+ cards in my old closet (mostly in 5K boxes). I opened the lids to see what was inside and it's mostly commons from 1990-1996 in all sports. I should probably spend the time to locate somewhere to donate these but we've got the large dumpster in the driveway that we rented so I'm really tempted to just haul them down and toss them in.

Does anybody have any suggestions of what I can do with these? Has anyone donated mass quantities of cards before? If so, where and what's the protocal?

Thanks for the help.

You could give them to Goodwill or a Children's Hospital but my experience is that kids today don't care about about baseball players from 10 years ago unless they are currently playing and expected to go to the Hall of Fame.
  • I have given my commons to the little kids around the neighborhood. They don't care if the cards aren't worth anything they're just happy to get something for free.

Salvation Army, Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul all often accept cards. If there is a local children's hospital, they often will as well.

Seriously, you can claim 1 cent apiece for the value on donation without much fear of the IRS arguing with you, and this amounts to $300.

It's worthwhile to not throw them away.

Give them to the kids. I had close to 60,000 commons that I had accumulated from the 80s and early 90s (all sports), and the guy who runs the youth activities at my church was eager to take them in. He hands them out to the kids, and the kids go nuts for them (even the little girls). It seems that the kids identify the team more than they do the player, but that's ok with them.

I know that my 8 year old niece loves the Sacramento Kings, and has a binder full of Kings players from the time they came to Sac till now. Doesn't matter if it's Ralf Sampson or Mike Bibby, if it's a guy in a Kings jersey, it's gold to her.

Anyways, your call. I figure all those cards will make it to the landfill eventually, but I prefer to process them through all the kids first.

Yea, so your '90's commons will become more scarce?
  • I just gave a bunch of 90s commons, which, yes, are worthless, to the elementary school near my house.

The teacher is handing them out as prizes, and though she could be lying to me she says the kids are loving them. I think she could've given them dog crap on a stick and they would've been just as happy, but still.......
At least they are going towards something other than the trash.
  • when I moved to the new house this past month, I pulled various partial sets and junk common boxes out of the closets and attic storage. Maybe 30-40 660-880 ct boxes...and 4-5 monster boxes full of SLAG...

I brought it down to the curb...took a pice of cardboard and in big black sharpie wrote.."FREE for the taking!!"

They were gone in less than 10 minutes.

    Why waste them..
  • My opinion is based on saving time you got a dumpster behind your house, just be done with it and live with less clutter it's healthier =) I have 80's and 90's cards im gonna go through and save what I want and burn or throw away the rest.

There is an article some where it shows you how to make them into a yule log. If you have a fireplace they will keep you warm some winter night. With the price of fuel and electricity who says your 90's commons aren't worth anything? image

About 5 or 6 years ago I donated about 450,000 cards to the local Shriner's Hospital (300,000) and the Greenville Memorial Children's Hospital (150.000). The Shriner's Hospital was tickled to get the cards but the Children's Hospital acted like they could care less.
