NGC is pulling stronger and stronger in the moderns market.

The NGC collector base is gettting stronger and stronger. A 2004 $25 proof platinum eagle just sold on E-bay for $3150 buy it now. More and more people are collecting NGC-70 sets in moderns because they can't complete the sets in PCGS-70 regardless of effort and sometimes regardless of money. If NGC was wise enough to tighten up just a little in the grading of moderns they would put a massive bight in PCGS sales IMHO.

Best Wishes,

Eric

Eric: As you know, PCGS-PR69DC coins fetch more than $2,000 and PCGS-PR70DC more than $7,000 on that particular coin. You are essentially saying that a NGC-PR70UC coin is now fetching a bit more than PCGS-PR69DC pricing ($3,150) and, I agree, that they should. It is a viable alternative to those unable or unwilling to purchase the PCGS-PR70DC coin.

Or, to put it another way, the NGC PR70 brings less than half what the PCGS PR70 brings. What was that about NGC pulling stronger in the moderns market?

I think that it reflects the fact that NGC is getting more business (due to their better turn-around times). Plus if you buy the coin and not the holder, I doubt that there is much if any difference between the PCGS 70 and the NGC 70.

  • I understand that NGC grades out about 5x the 70's out of the same # of coins than PCGS, so that would better explain the market price. So if you give PCGS 100 Buffalos and you get (6) in 70 and then you send a 100 Buffalos to NGC and you now get (30) in 70, wouldn't it make sense for the submitter to get 24 more 70s for more than they would get in a PCGS 69 holder???

Market price sometimes is dictated by what other wholesale buyers are going to pay, so they KNOW that the NGC coin is likely a very nice PCGS MS69 and won't pay the premium. That is why that coin is "half price".

Oddly enough that NGC Submitter is making more money than the PCGS Submitter doing it because nobody knows the above info...

I don't grade proofs, so I don't really have a vested interest in the above, however I would like the record set straight. Know what you're buying so that you pay the right price for what you like.

So if NGC tightens up, that will help???

    I don't get it.

If they tighten up, there will be less coins and less incentive to submit to NGC, thus effectively killing the NGC market.

I've been selling NGC MS70 Buffalos, and it's amazing how many of them have problems. I'm getting about 3 percent returns for problems....and the customers are correct. They are not perfect, yet NGC deemed them perfect. Obvious flecks and spots shouyld not be obvious to the naked eye on MS70 coins.

PCGS MS70's are much better quality.

    Just my opinion

"Obvious flecks and spots shouyld not be obvious to the naked eye on MS70 coins."

James: The kids and I have examined more than 11,000 MS Buffalo gold coins already. IMHO, about 90% of all of the fresh coins have the "flecks and spots" you are referring to easily visible with the naked eye. So, why does NGC appear to grade these coins with 5x-10x as many MS70 grades as PCGS? I believe it is simply this - PCGS generally does not call a coin MS70 if it has the pinpriks (mis-spelled to get past CU screening software) that are totally common to the pure gold planchets. On the other hand, perhaps NGC views these pinpriks in the planchets as "mint created" in the striking process and not counting against the grade? Locating a "perfect" MS Buffalo under 5x-10x power is a difficult task and they are truly beautiful coins.

P.S. Platinum Statue of Liberty coins are also commonly found with these same type of planchet problems, which often accounts for PCGS' sub-5% grade through rates as well I believe

NGC is pulling stronger and stronger in the moderns market.

That's because there are alot of idiots out there who don't know better. This is the only reason why NGC makes many more MS67 and MS70 labeled slabs than any other grading service. I wouldn't buy into these NGC MS70 whatevers unless I was a dealer and had a buyer for this stuff. But then we're back to selling to an idiot again but what does that say about me? What does it say about NGC as a grading service? There's no dignity in going down that road with NGC. My advice, make certain you have a NGC Population Report if one exists before venturing into NGC stuff.
