Mastro Auction Ends - Anyone win? Observations?

Couldnt believe the PSA 10 1986/87 Fleer Basketball went for half of what it was just two years ago. Authenticated bats seem all the rage -- prices are astronomical. PSA 9 Four Horsemen football went for 50% of what it went for a few years ago. Any observations?

    I had one win:

Colossal 1950's to 1980's Bowman and Topps Signed Cards Collection (4,669)

For a little over a buck a card (with the juice), I'm a very happy buyer.

As for observations, it seems that the really nice items sold at a premium, but that this was actually an auction were you could find some good buys. I just wish I had more $ to pick up items. image

schr1st, congrats on your win !

That is indeed an impressive auto collection to grab in one shot. Do you plan on reselling them or adding to your collection ? If they are keepers how will you display them ?

Some of them (the 57's and some of the other singles that I might need) will be for my collection, the rest will be resold.

schr1st - How the heck do they properly authenticate those cards? Do they check 1 out of every 20-40 ??

The autograph lot was a great buy. Deals are almost always found in huge lots like that. At one dollar per card that is a steal. With just a little bit of work you are going to end up keeping the ones you want for free. I was looking at the two John Hanc_ck autographs. They each finished a tad over $3,000. Since I am in a house transition(increasing price by two fold), I held off on bidding. I thought the hand written letter would go for more, and I would have bid much more. To me I thought those were bargains.

and that set has still not bottomed out. if you could "short" sports cards like the stock market, i would be shorting that set.

i will repeat a comment i made a couple of weeks ago. there are no mainstream sets from the 1980's that are rare or scarce. there are highly sought after cards with high resale values, but they are readily available.

tuff stuff tried to estimate the print set of the 1984 Fleer Update set at 30,000. that number seems way low as there are over 3000 clemens rookies already graded.

i noticed some topps rack cases going at decent prices for the buyers.

    Thanks,

Does anyone else find Mastronet's website to be fairly difficult to navigate? It just doesn't seem that user friendly at all...especially the search feature.

    But maybe it's just be.

That is a nice pickup. Congratulations! I'll have to look closer at what is left for today.

Very cool concept (shorting sports cards). ThePit.com should look into this!
  • I got a little buzzed last night and bid on this and I'm still the high bidder. Today I'm like, what if I win this stinkin' pinball machine? Anyone know what they generally go for?

Another great example of buzzing and bidding DO NOT mix......

The shipping on that sucker will probably cost more than the pinball machine itself! image

Honestly, I don't know. I'm guessing it's probably a situation where it's from a trusted collection (McAllister, etc.), and then it is spot checked.

  • I second the comment about shorting the 86/87 Fleer basketball set.

The pop report shows that there are still alot of potential 10's out there. There have been 11,000 Jordans graded and only 500-600 of each common (and the set is going down). You can imagine what would happen if the number of commons graded approached that of the stars. There must be dozens of potential 10's still out there for every player.

I'd much rather put the money into something like the '41 Playball DiMaggio PSA 9 (a little low at $56 k plus the juice IMO). At the National, it just looked stunning. This is a case of buying the card, not the holder.

I finally took the plunge and picked up the holly grail for the Perez collector, the 1968 Topps 3D, from the Mastro auction tonight. It is an upgrade from the PSA 5 I have. Love this card.

  • Interchanger.... I think you did o.k. on that pinball machine. I purchased a Bally "Pinball Wizard" circa 1974 for $2,500 s/h included. The "Pinball Wizard" is a true classic and the machine came in beautiful condition. I purchased mine on eBay from a guy out of Michigan and he had it shipped to me in Utah via "Pilot Air". You may wish to look them up and find out if you can use them. Depending on the relationship the seller has with an outfit like "Pilot Air" (or other reputable shipper of large items) they may get it shipped in the $300 range. Mine was also crated up by someone who knew what they were doing and you'd want that worked out for your machine as well. Probably another $75-$100 for professional crating job on the pinball machine. Considering the age of the machine and its appearant excellent condition.....your "buzz on" purchase will no doubt turn out to be quite the conversation piece image Hope it all works out for you!

These numbers are staggering! 11,000 Jordans graded? Wow.

    Scott-
I hope they don't hose you on the shipping on the pinball machine. I won a framed poster last auction and they tried to charge me over 375. to ship it, and it didn't have the disclaimer that the shipping would be substantial. From where you are you might be better off picking it up, if they don't ding you for sales tax for doing so.
A few years ago I had a few drinks on closing night, and woke up owing 5 figures. Not the place you want to get brave.

  • I had an arcade game shipped once, and it cost me around $400 for shipping. It turns out that the price is not unreasonable for such an item. It was about 200 pounds, and it was shipped door-to-door. The game was a Joust Williams game, approximately 6' tall. I wouldn't be surprised if a pinball machine would command similar shipping.

In my case, the game was shipped from Florida to Minnesota, so the distance may have had something to do with it.

    11,272 Jordans graded of which there are 1802 9's and 112 10's.

The Jordan has collapsed from $35 k to $5 k, ouch!!

schr1st - Let me know if you have any 1975 SSPC signed cards in that lot you want to sell.
  • I was happy I picked up the 1935 Chicles #1 Dutch Clark and #7 Ken Strong both in PSA 8 for my NFL HOF Rookie Set. Surprised at the prices I got them for. My congratulations to the winner of the #11 Turk Edwards PSA 8.

The Chicle #11 Turk Edwards went for $3900+17.5% (1500 SMR)
My winning bids were for the Clark $4100+17.5% (SMR 3500) and Strong was 2100 + 17.5% (SMR is 1750).

My congratulations to whoever oubid me and won the 1952 Bowman Small Frank Gifford PSA 9.

FWIW I bought an original Simpsons pinball machine for $1800- pretty much the going price. I think you did very well.

  • I have finally realized why I come to these boards. I can live vicariously through the purchases and collections of its members. I am lucky if I can spend 50 bucks on a card, so to see this kind of coin being dropped on a single card is mind-blowing. Now, of course if I could afford it, that would be me.

    Nice work!!!
