Is there one particular coin that you hoard????

wrightywrighty Posts: 840 ✭✭✭✭
Speaking for myself I always look for 1913-S Barber Dimes in G to VG, nice and original with full rims and a clean mint mark. I have been able to pick up only 5 over the last year or so all for between $15 and $23.

Any original PCGS XF-45 Dahlonega or Charlotte $5 is a no-brainer buy for me.

I look at all 1925P Merc dimes. Many people grade them wrong because of the weak strike they show.

I used to hoard '42-S quarters. At one time I had a PCGS MS67, 65, 63, an NGC 64 and quite a few raw ones. Now I'm down to one.

I wouldn't call it a hoard as I have only a half dozen or so, but I purchase every choice original 1840's XF large cent I can find. They are few and far between, given their (relatively) low price.

I buy every no-problem VF 1910-S Barber dime I find. The 1913-S is good, too, but overrated and hoarded by several, and always available in Good. 1909-D and 1909-S dimes in better grade circulated condition are worth searching for, too.

1972 DDO cents in all grades from PCGS MS-64RD to PCGS MS-67RD. Accumulated well over 60 of them in the last 10 years.

They are appreciating nicely in price. They are still undervalued in my opinion. But then again, I am not impartial.

At one point a few years ago, I bought every nice looking 1832 quarter I could find, looking for one that best resembled the one that my Grandfather had given me ( and stupidly sold off in a group of other coins ) .

I ended up with two rolls of them...got most of them certified by ANACS...some of which I recently consigned to a national auction house for this Long Beach convention.

Now, all I have left are a group of XF 45's and this one MS 64 coin ( Ex: Walser ) :image

Well, we all have our peculiarities, particularly us numismatists. For a while, it seemed I was a dumping ground for '15 $5 indians but I finally got rid of them except one. Now, I hoard Texas state quarters that I get from circulation. It is interesting how few there actually are in circulation here in Houston. So far I have a roll and a half after two years. I have struck thru's, brand new ones, beat up ones...they are all good because they have the outline of Texas and that beautiful lone star!

Oh yes, I also hoard Deleware state quarters too but I don't have too many, not even a roll.

I rathole several PCGS MS-66 & MS-67 clad washington quarters because of the difficulty in slabbing
certain dates in these grades. They aren't appreciated at this time, but someday maybe ........

I also have a bag with about $500 face of 1938-1959 circulated Jefferson Nickels. I know for a fact that there are a couple of 50-Ds, and at least 50+ each of the 38-Ds, 38-S, 39-Ds and 39-S. There are no silver war nickels in the bunch as I sold them off when silver was high. One day, these things are going to be worth a mint. Worse case is that they will still be worth a nickel which is what I got them for.

It was great reading about the coins which you just can't seem to get enough of!
So I'll add my 2 cents, er, 2 coins:

    --Bicentennials, and
    --New York state quarters, because

they represent to me such watershed years and events in recent history.

99 P Delaware State Quarters, bought two $500 boxes for face, in 99. Some of the rolls have crazy toning, face value how can I lose. Oh almost forgot pre 82 pennies, with copper around $3.50 a pound, can't go wrong. A pound of pennies is about 144 pieces, or a $1.44, or if their pre 82, $3.50 in copper.
