I looked them up this morning and they had a nice writeup about how they were new but had lots of grading experience and some of their coins had upgraded to PCGS but they were sure some of them wouldn't since grading is subjective (I took this as healthy humility) and then this afternoon they have a new "sold" sign on their website.

ps I found a link to an older TPG summary website that refers to CCGS as Capital Coin Grading Service but they didn't used the black plastic holders and the summary page didn't have a webpage for them.

I have had similar experience with them. When you grade the coin, and not the slab, you can get a decent coin from them at a fair price, and their packaging and shipping turnaround cannot be faulted. I paid 63 money for a 64 coin slabbed as a 65, which if Vamworld is to be believed, is the third-known MS example of 1921-D VAM-1AD. I'm not complaining, and I'll buy from them again.

I looked them up this morning and they had a nice writeup about how they were new but had lots of grading experience and some of their coins had upgraded to PCGS but they were sure some of them wouldn't since grading is subjective (I took this as healthy humility) and then this afternoon they have a new "sold" sign on their website.

lathmach, your an educated buyer, while the dealer may have sold you a decent coin, the slab end of the service is less than forthright in accurate grading.
While a serious collector such as yourself can see through the slab label and actually grade the coin, the inexperienced first time buyer who lacks grading wisdom is going to be taken serious advantage of.
Often, before people buy the reference books and devote lots of time in study to the particulars of grading of that series, they may buy a coin or two first. I would hate to think that their initial purchase of a certified coin was in a CCGS slab?
Positive BST as a seller: Namvet69, Lordmarcovan, Bigjpst, Soldi, mustanggt, CoinHoader, moursund, SufinxHi, al410, JWP
Again -- it goes back to evaluating the *coin*. I wouldn't go so far as to say that 'CCGS' is usually very accurate because I haven't seen enough of their coins...but I have seen a few that seem decent for the stated grade, and there's a good chance you can pick them off at a good price. I don't really consider their grade. I look at the coin, whether I like it and what I'd pay for it.
You can sometimes find nice coins in the "third world." I bought an 1854-O seated dime graded "UGS" VF-35. I think the grade was accurate and certainly sold at a considerable discount to a PCGS or NGC coin. (For what it's worth, it's cracked out and in my Dansco Seated Dime album.) I agree that the potential for the inexperienced to get burned is there, though, and that's unfortunate. It just goes to show that we've put too much emphasis on a slabber's opinion that many people don't learn how to evaluate coins on their own.

When I start my grading service, it's gonna be BGS.
Braille Grading Service.
It'll be unique. I'll hire nothing but blind guys, and since they've developed a good sense of touch, they'll do their grading by feeling all the details of the coins.
I'll market the coins to people that are always asking if the grader was blind that graded his coin.
The way to succeed in the coin grading business is to find a niche market.
