Idea's for a 70's set

For some time now I have been thinking of starting a set consisting of either the top 250 or 500 topps cards of the 70's. I'm not sure if I can cover all the great cards with just 250. Just really don't feel that collecting commons is really all that enjoyable or a good investment. In the past I have seen many people pay way to much for low pop commons just to lose big money. There are so many options with this, do I include 71 greatest moments, traded cards also should there be equal amounts for each year.

Any and all ideas are welcome!!

  • 1 - HOF rookies of the 70s.
2 - Top 10 action shots for each position of the 70s (i.e catchers - '73 Pat Corrales, '77 Fisk, '71 Munson, etc.)
    3 - MVPs of each year '70 to '79

How about all cards with an all-star designation (75-79) or just get a list of the allstar teams off the web for the whole decade. Or the world series winners? Or the HOFers?

That's a great idea, really. I would recommend checking out a copy of "Topps Baseball Cards: The Complete Picture Collection" to more easily look through the '70s sets and choose YOUR favorite 250 cards from the decade. If it were me, I wouldn't try for an equal number for each year. (For a few of those sets, it'd be tough for me to come up with 25 cards in each I'm fond of.) I also wouldn't necessarily include the cards with the highest dollar value. The '73 Schmidt rookie, for example, may be the most valuable of the set, but it ain't particulalry attractive. I'd go for the cards with both value AND visual appeal.

How about award winners (MVP, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year, etc.) + Team card of the Playoff Teams?

    2. All all-star cards
    3. All rookie of the years 1st and 2nd year
    4. All batting and pitching leader cards

  • Ok, after a little research, I quickly searched through the 1970 set. It seems that there will be over 80 cards that fall into the list above. This may be a little to much.

Good topic and some great ideas from everyone.

Ive considered doing a team set of each years world series champ, and perhaps both teams that made it to the series. Would make a pretty cool group i think....

    1970- Orioles/Reds
    1971-Pirates/Orioles
    1972-A's/Reds
    1973-A's/Mets
    1974-A's/Dodgers
    1975-Reds/Red Sox
    1976-Reds/Yankees
    1977-Yankees/Dodgers
    1978-Yankees/Dodgers
    1979-Pirates/Orioles

On top of that maybe throw in the cards of MVP, CY, ROY, world series MVP, and any cards dedicated to the playoffs.

Although putting together something like this encompasses commons, if the time ever came to sell there is the attraction of selling the complete team set in one shot.

A set idea I've been kicking around is the all star rookie card set.

But I like the mvp/cy young award winner set. Could do a league leader set, say for the league leaders in BA, HR, RBI and Wins, K's, and ERA from each year have that year's card.

  • I seem to fail whenever I try to collect with too much structure - structure that I didn't create - I start sets on the registry and inevitably give up time after time...

There are always too many cards I am not interested in such as a psa 9 1977 richie zisk or great players I am not interested in like mccovey, palmer or brock - I buy all the cards I like best - first - then tend to abandon the project when I get to the cards I was never terribly interested in that are required... I admire people who can stay focused on a 700+ card set... that's phenomonal...

Collecting a particular team or era seems to work for me - I started with the Knicks - then it sort of turned into cards from all sports based in New York - and expanded to include players that were legendary in NY or born in NY -

anyway - just giving an idea off the map a little...

edited to say: I do like the moustache idea! i HAVE A RAW COLLECTION OF AWESOME 70'S HAIRDOOS LIKE JAMES SILAS, ARTIS GILMORE dr. j... that's fun...
