If you had a choice....

assuming a late 50's/early 60's superstar card, would you rather have a BVG 7 or a PSA 6? And why?

Thanks for your thoughts!

  • Without a doubt I would take the PSA 6 because I trust PSA when it comes to grading vintage over BGS.

  • Would depend on the individual card. I buy the card not the holder. If all things are equal and I would rather have the PSA 6 so I could add it to the registry and I trust their grading.

Ditto. No matter who out of the Big Three grade it I look at the card, not the case.

  • What if you were slabbing it - if you knew Beckett would grade it a 7 and PSA a 6, which then?

  • I haven't ever had a BVG graded card, I have this crazy idea that all cards are held to the same standard in the third party grading process; with that being said PSA.

I'll go against the grain and say that if I knew it was a BVG 7 vs. a PSA 6, I would probably see if it was worth holdering in a bgs holder then sell it off, and buy a psa 7. Now, depending on the pop of the card in psa 6 or 7 and what the price difference is, if any, I may change my answer.

The last BVG 7 card I owned I cracked and submitted to PSA. Came back an 8.

The last one I had came back a 9, but in all fairness it started as a psa 8.

6/7 calls can be close, though, so I'd so with the eye appeal answer. Sometimes really sweet looking 6's can sell close to what low-end 7's go for.

That being said, I have found BVG grading to be pretty strict, but that's only on cards that I now own because I BOUGHT THE CARD NOT THE HOLDER.
