What to do with this buyer?

OK, I just got this message from a guy. This was his first and so far only e-mail to me.

Could you please send my your mailing address so I can return some cards
Thanks

Then I see he inquired about my address thru eBay.

This is a link to the auction. I don't understand what could be possibly wrong after a scan that large.

I responded to him:

Can you please let me know what the problem is and and we can discuss a resolution.

This doesn't look good from the start.

Hmmm. I can for the life of me see why he is returning a $2 card?
Is that the only card he bought from you?
I wouldnt worry to much till you hear from him again.

    Paul's a good guy.

    Can't imagine what's going on.
Maybe a crease or a trimmed card you missed.

Would have to agree with others though at this point.
He should be happy he got five nice vintage cards for $ 30 including shipping and move on with his life. image

    zef,

IMHO... any amount $30 or less to rid yourself of a pest is the way to go.

    Good luck!

I just got this response from thius guy:

<< <i>They have to much were on the corners. >>

I don't possibly understand how this guy was not able to see the corner wear in the scan below. He won 5 of the cards in the picture.

And this is why I dislike selling raw cards. I show a huge scan, I notate any wrinkles, creases, stains, marks, etc.

I would seriously just risk getting a neg and I would tell him to get a life. F' that guy. Serously. For now on you should also put in 20 point font that THERE ARE NO RETURNS. Good luck.
  • Another example of how people want to use Ebay as an approval service. Scans were fine and questions could have been asked in advance. People wanting PSA 9-10 quality cards for 2.00 apiece........

If there was a crease or mark or wax that I missed I would gladly take them back. But with a scan this big, I mean come on. I still don't know what I am going to do.

  • He wanted Darrel Brewster not his other brother Pete????? You don't list a return policy. Why not? If you do not state one, nor "all sales are final", you leave yourself open to disputes and unwaranted returns.

  • I'd say no returns. You never threw out a grade on the cards that could be questionable, they were listed as what you see is what you get.

My uncle gave me this free advice b4 I started
    selling cards online..

    1. Do not sell raw cards.

    2. If you must violate rule 1, DO state a condition. eBay
and PayPal are helpless to intervene on issues of a
reasonable and minor difference of opinion between buyer and
seller regarding "condition." Lingo like "This card is in about
good condition," is bullet-proof. (Obviously, you cannot
say this if it is not "arguable to a third-party" that the lingo
    was "substantially correct.")

("Lite corner wear and great color," is also a fun one, when
    appropriate.)

Not stating any condition and telling eBay/PayPal that "the scans told
the story," will fail for the seller way more than half-of-the-time.

Conservative descriptions are the best defense against unwarranted
    return requests.

All of my relevant sites say varieties of this: "All items are properly
described. There can be no refunds or returns." "If I make a mistake
in a describing an item, I will pay return postage and refund your
payment. Otherwise, all sales are final."

Failure to state a return policy will always be construed in the light
most favorable to the buyer, if eBay/PayPal are involved.

I believe that my return policy costs me business, but it eliminates
my having to deal with folks who want me to be an approval service.
Because I convert more than 75% of buyers to repeaters, they know
that I am not going to burn them AND they know that I do not do
refunds unless I make an error.

I have the same policy in the stores that have nothing to do with
cards. The used-clothing biz is particularly brutal on FB, but our
policies are the same regardless of the merch category.

I am sick of these bargain hunting bandits always looking for
something for $2.00 that they think is going to be worth $20.00.

    I hate buyers....... and sellers.

  • The available scan is huge, I agree.

Perhaps though he missed the "Click on image to enlarge card" and viewed only the thumbnail pic.

On the other hand, most of the corners look OK.

even though it sucks I would give the refund and move on. the only thing I would suggest is to list a condition in your listings , I have sold a lot of raw this way. if you don;t you will always get the guy wanting a psa 9 quality card for 1 and there is nothing you can do . you will get negged and it will hurt you in the long run.

I think you should give him a full refund and also enclose a handwritten apology note. Sometimes we have to sacrifice a few bucks to make a new friend. That's what this hobby is all about.

I don't believe this freaking guy!!!! I told him I would refund minus shipping. He said fine and sent the cards back. Imediately when I got them I refunded via Paypal. That was 8/21. Last night I get this e-mail, which coincidentally was right after I had auctions end that were from the same set as the cards he returned. I had him blocked so he could not bid.

    Jordon Bass
You were going to credit my paypal account and know credit to date!

    Paul

My response within 5 minutes was:

Paul- I refunded your payment thru Paypal upon immediate reciept of the cards you returned. It was processed on 8/21 and the refund # is 3GX70648GF7035002. Please check August 21st on your paypal account and you will see the refund. Thanks and let me know if you still are unable to see it.

I didn't hear back. So around noon today I followed up:

Paul- I haven't heard back from you whether you were able to find the refund I issued. Can you let me know if you have found it? Thanks, Jordan

About 10 minutes ago I got this e-mail from him:

    JORDON
i CHECKED PAYPAL AND MY BANK ACCOUNT AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED PAYMENT.
lET ME KNOW WHAT YOU FIND
    pAUL

So I called Paypal and they show that it has been credited to his account. This was my response:

Paul- I just got off the phone with Paypal and they show the refund has been processed on 8/21 as I said. They said that if you baid with a Paypal balance or your bank account that the refund is in your paypal balance. If you paid with a credit card, the credit card company will have to show the amount refunded on your statement. If you want to call Paypal, the phone number is 1-800-854-1366 and the reference number to the refund is 3GX70648GF7035002. Let me know what you find.

This guy is going to neg me even though I did everything right. I think he was pissed off he couldn't bid on my cards and is creating a problem.

If you paid with a credit card, the credit card company will have to show the amount refunded on your statement.

That's probably where the confusion came from. I received a refund from a cc purchase and it wasn't readily apparent that my credit card had been credited. However, after a brief period, the credit showed up on my online cc statement. I never bugged the seller about it, though.
