You are right. The US mint did not issue a mint set in 1950. Why? I have never heard a explanation for this given by the US Mint.

  • My guess is that 1950 was the first post war (WW2) year for proof sets, and the mint did not believe there would be any demand for mint sets.

They made mint sets in 1947, 1948 and 1949.

Right -- but not proof sets. The earlier poster suggested that maybe the Mint figured that by reintroducing proof sets in 1950, people wouldn't want mint sets like they did in years prior. So they made no mint sets in 1950, realized they erred based on feedback and resumed in '51.

You have a lot to learn, young lady. My post expressed a theory about the absence of 1950 mint sets.

FYI, I own em' all (proof and mint sets, that is)!

Keep on postin' nevertheless! You are a welcome addition to these boards. I just wish we had more of your generation!

Yes, MBT, I think you had it right. I thought I had read an explanation a while back, but couldn't remember, and when I read your initial post, said yep, he's right, that was it.

  • The Korean War began in 1950 they might of anticipated the need for metal for this war. And revised there estimate as the war continued into 1951.

    I suspect this is correct.

There was a similar event in 1982 when the mint discontinued mint sets as
part of Reagan's cost cutting program. Few mint set buyers were even aware
that they had been discontinued for many months and by the time the complaints
came in it was too late to make 1983 sets as well.
