Why are the St. Louis Cardinals so mediocre this year?

They are barely over .500. Do they have a lot of injuries? I know Pujols was out for awhile.

  • Mark Mulder has had the worst season of his career(currently rehabbing a shoulder injury); They have a rotation with only 1 starter with an era less than 4. They need another bat in the lineup, and I think an overhaul of the starting rotation is in order.

The starting pitching has sucked, the bullpen hasn't been real consistent and Izzy's blown about 800 saves this year. And they're definitely missing another bat in the lineup. The frustrating thing is that the team is probably raking in the dough thanks to the new stadium and radio deals, but they've done nothing to improve themselves. Jocketty began to lose his golden touch with the Mulder trade and LaRussa just seems stale. Yet they could still win the pennant in a very average NL.

I'm going to disagree with the premise of the question. The Cardinals have not been mediocre; they were excellent for the first half of the season, and have been absolutely terrible since. I've lost track of how many times they have given up 10 runs or more. Swept by the freakin' Cubs! This has been very, very depressing and I am actually hoping they just miss the playoffs this year because I fear they will get humiliated. Their starting rotation may be the worst in baseball right now.
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.
  • Mulder is a good pitcher, I don't just collect him b/c his cards are cheap. He just never looked healthy this season. Before this season, he only had 2 seasons with era above 4. He averages 18 wins and 9 losses for; last season he was 16-8 with a 3.6 era. Not amazing numbers, but very solid in todays games(today as in the juiced ball, juiced player, lowered mound era).

I don't have enough time. Everyone has pretty much summed it up. Here are my feelings.

You know, I really don't think that they will make the playoffs this year. They sure don't deserve it. It all started falling apart when Pujols was injured. If you will remember, he was on a record breaking pace when he went down.
