New to Cards

I've been a coin guy for a LONG time, and thought I might venture into other fields of collectibles. I have dabbled in comics to no avail, those things get expensive very quick. I was wondering what a good series might be (if that's the right word for it)? I ordered one SGC graded card off of eBay, just to see the card in the nice plastic case. Anyone have some cheapo PSA or SGC cards I could have? I want to get a feel for the cards. Sorry if I'm sounding like I just want free stuff, I want to learn the hobby. Anything anyone could teach me would be great. Thanks everyone in advance.

I believe lots of "cheapo" cards can be found on Ebay.
  • Can you point me to a auction where I can get a good value, and not just a junk card?

What do you want to collect?

    baseball, football, basketball, hockey, nonsport?

Vintage, modern, a favorite player, a favorite team, hall of famers only?

    Graded cards, raw cards?

    Expensive or cheap cards??

Tell me your likes and I'll point you to some good stuff. Sport, Football? Baseball? Basketball? Hockey? Any favorite teams or players? Did you collect any as a kid, those are fun to buy now in the "plastic case," or slab as its referred to in our world. Also, "series" in sports cards either means the World Series, or a part of a certain set that was released at one time. I think set is the common nomenclature for series in the coin and comic world.

I really am not trying to be a jerk, I just wanted to educate a little and get a feel for what you like to point you to some auctions. If you aren't passionate about sports, a team, a player or an era, you won't enjoy this endeavor. If you are looking for investment collectible sake, you won't like it either. Give us some of your likes in the sports world and I am sure we could point you in the right direction to test the water.

    Cheers,

    zef..

  • Baseball and football is mainly what I'm looking for. Being born in the 70's, I'm more into the modern stuff. Any ideas?

Where'd you grow up? Is there a team you follow?

  • In North Carolina, we don't have many good professional teams. I like the Yankees, and the Oakland Raiders.

With tose storied franchises you shouldn't have any problems. There is tons of stuff from Kenny Stabler and Marcus Allen to Tim Brown and Lamont Jordan. Yanks is the easiest find on eBay. Just type in: PSA Yankees or SGC Yankees and a whole slew will pop up.

Just browse around on eBay and see what grabs you. If you like modern, is it because the autographs and the game used stuff? If so, that can sometimes be had cheaply too. You aren't really helping us try to guide you. What in the card world that you've seen entices you? Also, and please answer this, are you looking to make money on cards?

  • At this point I'm just looking to get some cards. Any cards. I want to just start out with some things from my favorite teams, then move into sets, and older cards, autographs, etc.

700 Yankees cards - looks like a good assortment.

Raiders from 1982-2001 - Also looks like a good assortment.

Some folks like to focus on just one player, if you have a favorite. That's what I'm doing to narrow the field of what I'm looking for, and keep costs down.

Hope you enjoy sports cards image

How about the NFL Carolina Panthers? They did not begin until the 1990's, but they went to a SuperBowl a few years ago and last year back in the NFC Championship--this year they are picked to again be a contender and SuperBowl hopeful.

NHL Carolina Hurricanes? Stanley Cup Champs

NBA is back in Charlotte with a new franchise this past season. Give them a few years and hopefully they will provide a reason to cheer.

While North Carolina doesn't have the long history other states have in professional sports--they have definately been getting better since the 1990's. I've lived in North Carolina my whole life, and like you had to root for teams outside the state when I was a kid--and even though I still like those other teams, I can't help but also root for teams we now have in the state.

I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.
