1878 Halfpenny

I picked up this coin recently. It's one of the rarer dates in the halfpenny series.

This appears to be Freeman 15+O, which is R11.

It replaces my old one, but it turns out that this is Freeman 14+O, R14.

This second one holds a particularly fond memory for me - I got it out of a roll of halfpennies from the local bank in Great Yarmouth. It was quite a find!

** Edited: I believe RareBronzeCollector's post below to be correct. The "Bulge" in the forehead is characteristic of Obv 15, thus I have changed the numbers accordingly. **

    Helluva nice upgrade.

Of course you should keep the old one, too. If you cherrypicked it out of a bank roll, that is pretty impressive. How long ago was that? image Presumably before decimalization, eh?

    Waaay back.

I wonder if he has any anecdotes about the abdication of Edward VIII...

I was rather thinking he was able to measure the height of Charles I after that run-in with that head-chopper.....image
  • Interestingly enough, I believe that your OLD coin (the lower grade specimen) is an obverse 14 , F-334 (152 teeth ), whereas your newer specimen (the better grade coin) is actually an obverse 15 , F-337 (149 border teeth)

I have attached, for general interest, an example of an obverse 14, reverse N, unlisted in Freeman, but acknowledged in Iain Dracotts article on Bun Head Half Pennies......

Wybrit is making me feel like a bum. I need to look at my own 1/2 d's and get those Freeman numbers. You catch up and then things have a way of accumulating and the homework needing to be done as to attribution. I suppose that Winter will come soon enough!

I'll look at the coins some more - I went off of the second edition of Freeman. You may be right - I don't have any reference to tooth count. Source?

  • Tooth count information is from Iain Dracott's article in Coin News in 2004

    Obv 14 152 teeth
    Obv 15 149 teeth
