Awesome. Simply wonderful. When I see old gold like this, in this condition, I wonder about the pedigree from way back. I wonder who had the means to stash it away without having to worry about the rent or other mundane expenses. I wonder if it wasn't the king himself who squirreled it away.

Maybe not personally, but wouldn't it be a pretty safe bet that a big-denomination, high-grade gold coin like this spent some time tucked away in the royal treasury?

Yeah. And I sure wish the Stuarts were still enthroned; I would certainly have a bigger budget for my coin addiction...

The marvelous thing about this coin is the size. It is 38-39 mm, roughly the size of a Morgan Dollar and 4mm larger than a US Gold Double Eagle. This large planchet allows so much artistry. I bet that is one fine coin in hand
In the description, they list the grade as VF. Even taking into account that it's the British "VF" as opposed to U.S. grading standards, I would have graded it higher, based on the pictures. By U.S. standards it's easily EF45 if not AU50-55.
I'll take VFs like that all day long, especially given how prone gold is to dings and hits (of which this piece appears to have none).

Coinpictures, the coin is graded good VF by strict English standards which is pretty much AU55 in a slab.

<< <i>Awesome piece. But on the grading - how would such a piece ever have been used in circulation to warrant EF or AU?

They were used like all gold coinage of the time - primarily in large transactions between merchants, bankers and the nobility.
