Searched some penny rolls today, 30 wheats and a ...

Picked up $20 worth of pennies today to search through, nothing special at first, an occasional 50's wheat cent here and there... and then a well worn one popped up tales first, when I flipped it... 1909 ! and at first glance almost looked like it had a mint mark, but alas, it is just a nick below the date. Figured that would be my find for the day. Then a couple of rolls later- another 1909, this one still having some mint luster- although Abe does look to have something growing out of his neck. Found a few more wheaties including a couple of S mints (rare up here in North East) , a few coins from twenty's and 30's - the best being a 20-D. And then...probably my first and only circulation find of one...I think you will see by the pictures what it was. Its in better shape than the one in my penny book, so it will go in there. It has a full and strong Liberty and full shield lines. All together 31 keepers. Also found out demolition is starting on a block near my parents house where a local grocery store (50's-60's style mom and pop type) was located, they also bought several homes adjacent, the whole block will be razed in a few days to make way for a new convienence store/gas station. Is it generally ok to take a decector to such a site, or should one ask permission? I was thinking about maybe hitting the block in the evening or on the weekend after everything is gone. Anyways, here's the pcitures of my roll finds...

  • me and my son try to go through 150.00 in pennies a week. so far this year we have found around 4700 wheats this year and 5000 last year. wegot a 50.00 bag about a month ago and got 167 wheats 3 indian heads and 12 steel pennies. that was the best this year. one 25.00 box last year we found 592 wheats in it. we also have found 10 of those 1999 wide am pennies. we sold 3 on ebay last year and got around 900.00 for the 3. i think the last 2 ywears we have found 6 indian heads. i guess its worth it to look through those bags. later greg

I am trying to pick up $20 to $30 a week and look at. Have found 2 each of the 98 and 2000 wide AM's so far, and only one of the 99's. How are you doing finding those other two years? (just wondering if the huge price difference is really based on actual numbers or just hype- seems like one mistaken die would last about the same each year). I have also been looking for the close AM 92's. Back to the Indian heads, hard to believe they still show up that much- must be the grand kids who inherit grandpa's/grandma's piggy bank factor. I was kinda of shocked when I saw the date on the one I found- 1883, would have expected if any to be found it would have been in the 1900's. I have been searching/collecting coins since about 1975 and never expected to find one in a roll or change. Then again my next door neighbor got an 1890 V nickel from McDonalds last spring in change.
  • Do you guys just buy rolls of regular pennies at the bank or where do you purchase them?

You found that sharp 1883 IHC in a bank roll? That has to be my vote for Wild Card of the month, if so!

    Wow!

  • in the wide 98,s and 2000,s we have about 70 of each and only 10 99,s. my son got a real nice 1880 ihc in a roll you could read every letter in liberty just like it was new. he also got an 1859 but it was worn a bit. as for us we go to the band
k and buy bags of 5000 loose pennies. i got 2 today and in the first one i found 28 wheats 3 i think were from the 30,s. and i think 2 s-mintmarks. this bag had probably 50 real nice 72,s in it. when he gets home from band practice he will check for double dies on them. if you got a bank that gets pennies in 25.00 boxes those seem to have better pennies in them. some bank in ohio where some of ours came from use cloth bags. we found quarters dimes and nickels in them when we took them back to the bank to count we got 60.oo for some of them so we made a proffit. later greg

Yep, that 1883 was nice enough to replace the one in my Dansco set- nice full Liberty with just the one small spot on the headress. Too bad it couldn't have been an 1877 or 09-s to fill the two empty holes. It was funny when it popped out of the roll (they were in the bank type double sealed wrappers)- the kind you have to break open. My brother had just stopped by to visit and see what I was doing, he was just looking at the two 1909s I found when I broke the roll open and was one of the first coins to catch my eye-I was talking to him about the 09's being quite the find-nearly 100 years old- and then the Indian appeared! The last time my brother dropped by while I was searching rolls I found a 2000 wide AM while he walked in and I had just cracked a roll. Have to tell him to stop by more often while I am searching.
  • just started to look through the second bag and out came a 1891 indian. been pretty lucky lately. later greg

  • in 1998,1999,2000 plain pennies on the back where it says united states of america the a and m in america have a space between them. i think it is a proof mold used on a regular issued penny. hope that makes some sense to someone. later greg

That's an amazing find for a bank roll search. Excellent!

I can top it, but I wasn't hunting from stuff out of circulation. I was going through a bulk lot of Wheaties early last year and found this.
