NGC Flown Coins/Medals aboard the APOLLO Missions

The Robbins Medals are privately minted coins that were done specifically for the astronauts. The tradition started with Apollo 7, the first manned Apollo mission, and continued throughout Apollo, Skylab, ASTP, Shuttle and International Space Station. They are normally limited to 100-400 medals and are all serial numbered. Two books on the subject document which were flown, etc. Here is a link to the most desirable APOLLO ROBBINS MEDALS up at auction. These are the first to have been slabbed. NGC now has entered this field. The medals offered are with a very low reserve. Please take a look.

In answer to the many questions received, the high price mark for an APOLLO 11 Flown silver Robbins Medal was in 1999 at the Christie's sale in NYC. It fetched approximately $12,000 with buyers premium. There were 450 Apollo 11 medals stowed aboard the command module. The Apollo 7 medal had only 255 flown. The Apollo 10 medal had only 300 flown. The Apollo 13 had 404 flown. The most desirable Robbins Medals come from astronaut collections with signed certification letters attesting to their flown status, etc. All of these medals come with certification letters and are all NGC graded and slabbed.

Again, in answer to the many questions. The Robbins Medals display the mission emblem in either silver or gold on the obverse. The reverse has blank planchets designating Launch, landing and return where the dates were engraved upon the return to earth. The astronauts were in search of a memento to commemorate their historic missions. Many family an friends would want a piece of it. So the astronauts would stow these small coins/medals aboard the command module. Only active participants of the Astronaut Flight Office were permitted to purchase these medals before the launch. So, any that surface today were at one time, the property of an astronaut. The medals here are top notch and all are accompanied by letters of certification from an astronaut. Please take a look.
