Not my first find, (I believe that was a rusty nail) but the first coin I found with a modern detector was rather interesting. I found it even before I dug my first modern Memorial cent.

This excludes the finds made in the 1970s and early 1980s when I was a kid, using an old TR unit- unfortunately I did not keep records then. My recordkeeping began in 1992. One of the very first finds I can remember, made with a $15 "toy" detector in the late 70s, was a 1946 dog rabies vaccination tag.

  • I believe it was a clad quarter found in a park in Milwaukee, WI. (35th and Burnham, I forgot the name of that park already).

  • THIS will be my first detector. I just bought it and it should come in a few days. Do you think I could find anything cool with it? If so, how deep do you think this thing can detect?

A coin from 1991, found on a beach.
My very first signal was a ghost signal at 8 inches. I dug in the spot for ages, never found anything. Eventually the signal disappeared too image

On my first outing on that beach, I got three modern coins in about three hours. I thought I was doing a really lousy job (but was still very excited).
While this was true, I later found out that this beach was one of the worst beaches I could possibly have started with - lots of trash but very few coins. image

  • My first was a plain ol' Lincoln Memorial cent....just under the surface ....not much, it showed me the thing worked..

My very first find was a 1965 clad quarter in fall of 1995 at a neighbors house. I had origionally borrowed this detector to see if I could find the other half of a hemitite axe when I was looking for arrowheads. After I found the quarter I was hooked and got my own detector.

Oh man! You don't see too many hematite axes whole or broken!
