New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Sounds good, but the reality is that about 90% of the people you typically see at a coin show walking up and down the aisles tend to be "eccentric" looking older men.

Yeah, but people shouldn't be considered differently just because they are female.

I agree with you, but my perception of human progress says we unfortunately still have a way to go. Not because people want to discriminate against women, I think, but because they notice them and tend to want them to blossom in the field.
Many in the media and other places, for example, like to point out "the first woman to do X" or the "first black to do Y" or whatever. And while that's progress, I submit that it will REALLY be progress when we have no reason to notice any more.
Right now, it's still unusual for women to rise up in numismatics. I hope you haven't perceived anyone thinking it's bad when it happens, because over the years I've heard little but support and desire to see more women make it in the field.
It gets dull dealing with almost nothing but older white males. It would be nice if the hobby reflected the diversity of the people of the nation. Not forced, but because it's what people wanted to do and because they felt they could make it and be welcomed into the field.

<< <i>I would like to add Cynthia (Cindy) Mohon and her late friend and business partner, Gloria Peters. Together they were in business as P-M Rare Coins, and authored a nice book on Shield and Liberty nickels. Best of all, Cindy is, and Gloria was, a true numismatist. I believe there is an organization called WIN (Women in Numismatics) to which both of them belonged. Sadly, Gloria passed away a few years ago.
Best,

Good addition. Cindy and Gloria deserve to be on my list as well.
The knowledgeable female numismatists aren't considered different from any of their male counterparts. In fact some of the more astute females are far more "dangerous" than many of the men.
michael...If you like slender attractive Asian men may you consider Paul Song from Superior (oh boy...Paul's gonna kill me tommorrow). There aren't too many Asian female numismatists out there, unfortunately.
