Quarter grading

Any of these quarters worth grading, or are they all G's?imageimage

  • Well, yes I think they're all Gs. The 1897-S are the best of the bunch, but probably still not worth grading. Interesting the mintmark is so far shifted on one though. Perhaps a Barber quarter expert on the boards knows if thats worth a premium.

You are right the mintmarks on the top coins appear between the R and the D. Of the coins on the bottom one mintmark, the S appears above the R, and the other O mintmark appears all the way over the D. So I guess the bottom two coins have off center mintmarks. Is this unusual?

  • I think the 97-O would go VG-08. The others are G-04, I think.

I, too, was struck by the placement of the mintmark on the 92-S. Does anyone know if that was the normal placement on that issue?

All G-4's, except for the 97-O, which looks like a G-6

MM placement on 92 S and O were central, after that the mint realized that there wasn't enough room to properly place the MM in the center of the tail. MMs were shifted beginning in 1893, and they weren't overly standard in placement. I can't give a VG to any of those coins, maybe a 6 to a couple where one or two letters in LIBERTY show up.
