#1, the background needs to be darker than the foreground for your "minds eye" to process it correctly.

Not much difference, but the dark background does help slightly.

I like #1 better as #2 comes off looking just a little harsh. I would only use #2 if it is going to be on a page with a white background.

Unless you are using it on eBay where the rest of the background will be white, if that is the case use #2.
