1984-85 OPC Hockey

I have an opportunity to pick up a few sets. I checked ebay completed auctions, but still want to know what I should pay for a near mint-mint set. Is this a set I can put away for 20 years and it will appreciate? Is it worth buying a few sets to put away for 20 years?

No. It was always one of my favorite sets, but it's also one of the most widely available OPC sets of that era. Plus all the key cards have probably already hit their hobby peak. There might be a temporary spike in interest when guys like Yzerman get elected to the Hall of Fame, but I wouldn't consider this set a good investment. The time to buy was long, long ago.

  • Having ripped 10+ cases of this stuff...watch out when anyone says NM-MT sets..

Centering is a HUGE issue with these cards...as are bad OPC cuts and rough borders.
Back in 93 and 94 I tried to put together a complete MINT and centered set...out of 20K singles that were in order. I did it eventually...but had to upgrade a few cards here and there.

Back then boxes were at $75 each and Neely RC's and Yzerman were $20 and $40 respectively.

Now that grading has taken over....star cards command a premium in PSA 10....as they should.

I haven't looked in awhile...but I saw sets not too long ago for $100-$140 each. Sets might not be the investment...high end singles will be though. Although if you can pick up nice sets at $60-$75 each...it may be worth it!!

The problem that I see is that back in the day...TONS of this was ripped...atleast here in New England. There are alot of singles floating around....and if guys like 4SC gets ahold of them....they will be graded and the 9's dumped off for dirt...and 10's for what the market will bare. In time look for alot more singles to come out of the woodwork as more $5 specials arise.

I was working on and 85-86 Topps Set( was the #1 Set All Time)..and had a large portion of everything graded up to 8 months ago. Then 4SC gets a boatload of it and starts to dump PSA 9 singles for $4.00. At that point it lost it's "investment" luster to me...and was sold off on Ebay.
The current owner has taken up over 90% complete....and with my dupes...I actually Registered the #2 Set........funny part is...I still have 200-300 singles to grade...but there's not enough action on the set to make it worth my while. And I refuse to pay $5 to grade a card and then dump it at $4.00 just to keep up with the bafoons on Ebay.

    Good luck in your decision...
  • This is a set that, to me, should be a great investment, but hockey collectors, for the most part, seem to be indifferent to it.

This set already has the rookie cards of three Hall of Famers: Yzerman, Lafontaine and Neely. And is certain to have at least two more Hall of Famer rookies: Gilmour and Chelios - and possibly a third in Barrasso.

I can't even get $3.00 for a raw (NRMT) Lafontaine on eBay, and graded rookies don't fair much better.

Yzerman has a pretty big collector following. Neely has some collectors, but as for the rest of the major rookies, they are tough to give away these days.

It's still a great and attractive set, but yes, like most '80s sets its best days are probably behind it. (I remember buying a Doug Gilmour rookie for about $3 and then he had his big two seasons in the early '90s and it shot up to $50-$60.) It's not that collectors are nesessarily indifferent to '84-85. It's just that like most sports cards from the '80s 1) most of the players have retired and 2) most of the collectors who wanted certain cards have had them for years already. You never know, though. A PSA set registry following can usually create new demand.

    I agree 100%..

Just let me know when it starts...I have 4K hockey singles already pulled for grading..from 81 through 88 OPC.

But up til now..it's just not worth it economically to grade. If they don't come back as 10's..they are break even propositions at best.
