The Amateur Sports Protection Act became a United States federal law in 1992. It is a law to prohibit sports gambling under State law.

Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act - Makes it unlawful for a governmental entity, or a person acting pursuant to the law or compact of such an entity, to operate, sponsor, advertise, promote, license, or authorize a lottery, sweepstakes, or other betting, gambling, or wagering scheme based, directly or indirectly, on one or more competitive games in which amateur or professional athletes participate, or intend to participate, or on one or more performances of such athletes in such games. Authorizes the commencement of a civil action in district court to enjoin violations committed under this Act. Sets forth specified exceptions to such prohibitions.

Note that Nevada was grandfathered in, and sports betting there is still allowed.

    stevek,

It's not illegal or against the law if all pool money is paid out. Only if the "house" makes a profit or takes a cut does a pool violate the law.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

That is incorrect. For example office gambling pools are technically illegal.

Hey, don't kill the messenger here...xbaggypants can do whatever he wants. Is it worth the possibility of civil action from the feds? He'll decide that. You must understand that the feds kinda leave people alone when doing stuff like this in privare such as an office pool...start thumbing your nose at the law in public, and the feds are gonna possibly come down hard.
