1952 Topps Mantle Autograph Card on eBay

Text
Says the ownder erased mantle's name to have him sign it there. I saw one come up a year or so ago that was PSA/DNA but not slabbed, the card was heavily creased but I think sold for $3,000 and I really wanted to but it. It was the same seller who had the glove signed by 100+ HOFers. I may have to dig up the thread.

As blasphemous as that is, I have to admit, I really like the looks of it. But then I'm torn....it's a 52 Mantle....but it's a one of a kind...but it's his most prized card....but it does look nice.

I wouldn't mind owning it. Is the "Authentic" grade just for the auto, or is the card authentic as well? Do we even know if the card is a reprint or not?

I've seen a few 52's that have had the facsimile autograph erased and have been signed like that. Personally I don't like it, but oh well.

There was a PSA/DNA 2 (without the erase) that ended last night in Premier Auctions (formerly Mike Gutierrez Auctions) first go around without Mike. It ended at $14,805 plus premium. I didn't think it would get above 6K. Whoops!

I like it too. Not an expert but the card certainly looks authentic. What do you think KY's reserve is?

  • It would probably be a wise investment to buy it in the GAI slab, have PSA grade/slab it, and flip it.

Seeing as how it's a Kit Young auction, the reserve is probably $38,000. image

I remember reading in a card magazine years ago, like early 80s, how there were some collectors who did this very thing, erasing the sig and getting a real one. I think some people were going for a complete set. I've posted about this here once or twice, no one remembered seeing any like it. Personally, I think it's awesome, if it's a real auto.

Interesting card - not sure how I feel about this.

My first instinct - it would be better to have left the card alone and taken a reprint to have signed.

One of a kind? Most likely - whether the demand parallels it's 1/1 status? I don't know.

Maybe it will grow on me?

Here are a couple that I have:

They were part of a PSA/DNA lot that I picked up a while ago. At first, I didn't know what to make of them (if they were printing errors that had just been signed instead or what not. Maybe these came from the same collection that the Mantle originated from. Who knows.

How is the facsimile erased? Does it come off that easy?

I'm guessing some sort of artists eraser or something. On the cards I have, it's hard to see what would be considered "normal" erase marks. The area is duller than the rest of the card, but there aren't any real marks or anything.

Does the erasing of the original facsimile signature constitute altering the card to the point where PSA will not encapsulate that in one of its holders?
