Coal Notgeld

I am very interested in acquiring one of these pieces, and now I have an opportunity to BIN one. I have no idea of their value. Is $200 a reasonable price? Seems high to me, but the seller says they're rare (yeah I know...)

  • If it's something you want, and coin go without the $200, then buy all means buy it.

  • It may indeed be a rare piece worth $200, but if you are just looking for a piece of coal scrip to add to your collection, there are many, many pieces out there for less than $10. Don't know if you want this particular piece, or just a representative of that branch of numismatics.

  • I want a representative piece of that branch of numismatics. However, this particular one is a coin-shaped piece of "pressed galvanized coal", with an image molded in. Are they all like that? I've never actually seen a picture of one before now.
  • Ohhh. It's actually made of coal!! I didn't realize that. I just (wrongly) assumed you meant coal scrip, issued by the coal mining companies for use in their stores.

I don't know anything about an actual coal coin/token. Sounds cool, tho.

Sounds like a neat coin. I almost bought a mexican one made out of pressed carboard a few weeks ago.

I really think the coal notgeld is truly neat. There are three "coins" in the set and I have been this close > < on several occasions to breaking down and buying one. The last few pieces I've looked at have been priced in the $200 range so that is probably pretty close to the going rate. (You've got me tempted again, and I know where a piece is.) Just make sure the seller packages it very well for shipping. These pieces are somwhat fragile and are prone to chipping and breaking.
  • How uncommon are they? I only just set up a Search for them this week, and immediately got a hit. So either my timing is extraordinary and I need to jump on this, or else they come up fairly often. My fear is I will rush into something and find out they are fairly common. $200 is a lotta geld for me.
