Home Metal Detecting

Questions

Are there any documented cases of people hitting it BIG with a detector and if so was it by accident doing a sweep or a planned hunt.

I'm curious. You guys pull some neat stuff out of the ground but I wonder if anything really huge, or worth tons of money or exceptional historical signifigance has ever been found with the types of detectors that are commonly used.

Thanks.

  • I would say most get lucky if they find anything of great value just metal detecting.
I know of a couple of guy's in California who found Territorai gold piece's/private minted gold coin's that were quite rare and valuable. Those were being in the right place at the right time and alot of luck.

Now if you talk about Mel Fisher or Jimmy Sierra that took alot of research and time to locate the big pay off.

As for historical, metal detectorist find some really great historical item's in England, that are in the museum's now.

So if your wanting to just find some old coin's and relic's,you will still have to do some research but not much.
Now if your wanting to find some huge cache or something of historical value then you are going to have to do alot of hard serious research and hitting the field alot to check that area out.

    What, like this?

I'd say £1.75 million counts as "hitting it BIG"...

THAT'S what I'm talking about. Looking for a hammer and accidently stumbles into a fortune. Makes me want to buy a detector.
