First submission questions

I finally joined the Collectors Club and am getting my 6 free submission ready. I have a some questions.
1) Should I put the cards in penny sleeves before putting them in the Card Savers? Does PSA send more Card Savers when they return my cards?
2) With the voucher for the free subs I can send cards valued under $500. How strict are they on this? I know the insurance is based on the value you put.
3) Is it best to pay with a check or do most of you include your credit card number with the submission?
4) What is the best way to ship the package? Is it best to send it registered and insured through the USPS? What about FedEx or USPS next day air?
Thanks, James

    1. Yes, and no they don't send you any back
    2. Be smart about it, send it what you think will get the best grade and at the same time be worth the most. From what I hear they aren't too strict on the dollar value
    3. credit card. Just, cuz that's a sold record.
    4. send it anyway in which it needs to be signed for. That'll be a solid enough record to stand up in case it is "lost".
    Collecting;
    Mark Mulder rookies
    Chipper Jones rookies
    Orlando Cabrera rookies
    Lawrence Taylor
    Sam Huff
    Lavar Arrington
    NY Giants
    NY Yankees
    NJ Nets
    NJ Devils
1950s-1960s Topps NY Giants Team cards

Looking for Topps rookies as well.

    Yes

If the card SMR's for $500 in a given year/grade you're fine. ie. Any modern card that SMR's for <$500 in PSA 8, I think vintage is PSA 7 SMR but someone else will know for sure

    3) Is it best to pay with a check or do most of you include your credit card number with the submission?
I include my CC on the form, but it doesn't matter, it's processed in the same amount of time

    4) What is the best way to ship the package? Is it best to send it registered and insured through the USPS? What about FedEx or USPS next day air?
    a. They don't take UPS Packages.
    b. I send my cheaper <$5k submissions via insured priority mail with DC, otherwise I use registered mail.
    c. I also have a FedEx acct for return shipping because it's a lot cheaper than registered. (Again, unless it's >$5k submission, then it's registered return mail)
    d. Also, make sure to mark your service level clearly on the outside of the package and at the top of the submission form! I use a purple sharpie for this.
    e. You'll also want to use cardboard or those modern dummy cards to stiffen up your cards. I put mine in penny sleeve, card saver I, graded card bag w/ either cardboard or the dummy card, seal graded card bag, put in box with bubble wrap then peanuts.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks, James
  • Included in your intial packet is a booklet that pretty much walks you through step-by-step the entire process. I'd stick to that, exactly as they reccommend, crossing all your t's and dotting all your i's.

If I remember correctly, they won't even accept a package sent UPS and in order to send FedEx you have to already have a shipping account with them. I send USPS and have never had a problem.

You're going to want to buy some CardSaver I because they won't send you any back. This goes for the yellow stickers as well. Stickers can be picked up at Staples, Office Depot, Office Max, etc and Card Saver I's can be bought at your local card shop, eBay or directly through PSA but you have to call their customer service line, you can't purchase them through the website.

Again, I can't stress enough how important it is to follow their shipping instructions to the letter. There's another post on here about someone who sent in a bunch in a hard plastic 50 count box and they were dinged up during shipping. Penny sleeves, Card Saver I (not Card Saver II), cardboard pieces around them, rubber bands, wrapped in bubble wrap, packing peanuts and a box that is covered in that sticky brown glue tape. Don't wrap your box in packing tape or anything else because the PO won't shipo it priority if you do. In fact, the PO will gladly give you some of that sticky brown glue tape for you to use. Then clearly mark every side of the box with your grading service (CLUB for your first sub) and don't forget to include the invoice.

FYI, the club subs are pretty fast. I got my grades in about a week and that was including the National.

    Good luck.

Be sure to slip an extra $20.00 behind one of the cards in the cardsaver. I do it all the time and am always pleased with my grades.

Thanks for all the responses. I finally decided on the cards to send. A couple of the cards were in Beckett slabs so I'll see how they compare to the PSA grades. Which copy of the submission form do I keep?
    Thanks, James
  • You don't keep one, send the whole thing. It's also a good idea to make scan of all the cards you're sending and a photocopy of the sub form. Not that I don't trust PSA, I'm just fully aware that accidents can occur, even to no fault of PSA.

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

If you are using an internet form make sure you make a copy for yourself. If you are using one of your pre-printed forms, the last copy (gold) should be removed and kept.

  • Easy Lawnmowerman. Don't make me post some of my Mosi Tatupu highlight reel and force you to reconsider your RB affiliation.

Cards are on the way to California. Here is a list of what I sent. I can post scans if anyone is intertested in seeing the cards. Most of these were in BVG holders.
    James

Using my 6 card voucher I sent:
    1953 Bowman Bauer/Berra/Mantle
    1953 Bowman Whitey Ford
    1954 Bowman Duke Snider
    1955 Topps Ted Williams
1956 Topps Hank Aaron - was BVG evidence of recoloring. I couldn't see anything wrong.
    1959 Topps Mickey Mantle

On another sub form I sent:
    1953 Bowman Peewee Reese
    1954 Bowman Mickey Mantle
    1956 Topps Mickey Mantle
