This loser is just so messed up. I'm sure the Broncos are happy they cut him in training camp
last year. Good thing he didn't sign on with another team as he is just trouble wherever he goes.

I can't open the link for some reason, but I've been following this story as it unfolds all morning. I'm obsessed with Maurice Clarett- I admit it. There's something about him that I find totally compelling, if only because he ranks just below Lawrence Phillips, Rae Carruth and O.J on the all-degenerate team.

Latest reports also put 1/2 a fifth of vodka and an assault rifle at the scene of the crime as well. What else will they find? Claymores? There's already four handguns involved, a bulletproof vest, a 'bullet necklace' (whatever the hell that is)... No doubt about it, ol' Mo was looking to get even with someone.

And another interesting question which I heard broached on the radio this morning: Exactly how does one go about obtaining a bulletproof vest? As I recall Goose is in law enforcement (correct me if I'm wrong), so hopefully he can shed some light on how a 'civilian' would go about getting one. You could threaten to take everything I own if I couldn't come up with a Kevlar vest in 24 hrs. and I wouldn't have the foggiest idea where to get one. Do you mail order them from the back of Solider of Fortune or something? Because they sure as heck don't sell them a Cabela's.
  • boopotts-You can pick up surplus military vests in different grades at military shops(think old camo shops), online, or through mail order. Also, you can pick up the chest plates through similar routes. Hell you can even buy them off ebay(I prefer military surplus shops personally).

On Clarett, he's got this idea that he's some sortof thug. That'll be in his mind til he either turns out to be the lipgloss wearer in prison or he tries to mess who the wrong guy.

    boopotts......

I'm not sure if a civilian can order them or not from a LEO supply place but do know like others mentioned that they are available at military surplus stores and hell I've even seen classified ads in the newspaper stating it was an "ex cop" selling his BP vest!

A BP vest, in my opinion, is something that a civillian does not need and should not have access to.

And I'll agree with the one comment above.....my first thoughts when I saw the story was that it was a good thing he was caught before he got into whatever it was he was going to do. He certainly was not headed to deliver cookies or meals to the elderly. I'm guessing he was heading to rob something and was prepared for a stand off if caught or cornered.

Just listened to the story on ESPN....3 loaded handguns, 1 assault rifle, and 3 or 4 loaded rifles.

The kid had the world by the balls at one time......
  • BoopottsBoopotts Posts: 6,784 ✭✭
Very interesting about the vests. I'm no anti-gun freak, since I do own a Mossberg and an SKS, but I do believe that the average clown should not be able to buy them. Why would you ever need it, unless you were out partying with the Miami Hurricanes?

They need to stop giving this kid chances and stick him in jail for a 5-10 year stint, see how that straightens him out.

I doubt it. O.C aka "pepper spray" will turn the tuffest guy into a complete wimp, especially if it is mixed with C.N, wich nowadays almost all law enforcement are equipped with.

The kid is a straight loser. I remember him on tv leaving court all smiles. Its too bad he didnt just stay at Ohio State for one more season then got the NFL riches....makes me wonder why he was in such a hurry for all that money, probaby to operate better in the HOOD.

most departments are equipped with "OC" which does not have any other types of "gas" in it such as CS or CN.
  • AxtellAxtell Posts: 10,037 ✭✭
He had 3 loaded handguns and a rifle; a hatchet; and he was wearing a bulletproof vest (which made the tazering attempt unsuccessful).

He needs to go away for a long, long time.
  • Hi all

I was born at Ohio State University hospital (1958). I have lived in the central ohio area most of my life. And been a buckeye fan all along. Though i must say, i don`t kick the dog and cuss out opposing fans if OSU does not win.

I agree with much of what has been said. He could have had the fifteenth largest city in the nation at his feet. The gold key to the city. Even if he never played pro ball at all. Columbus is a college football town. PERIOD.

I feel great sadness for this young man. He is not a loser, he is a talented football player. What your seeing is the young man with no football field on which to perform. He is performing like many of the young men he grew up with. Of course, you probably have never heard of them, they are lower income men who did`nt play football at Ohio State. You might very well find that what he`s going through is not so different from what they are going through. Man is a product of his enviorment.

In my life, i made some very poor choices as a young man. I spent time in and out of jails. Drinking, fighting, etc....
WHAT, you say you never heard of all that stuff ??? I NEVER PLAYED FOOTBALL AT OHIO STATE or you would have !!

He,, is like me,, who is like YOU !!

    Lee,

with all due respect, I doubt you were arrested after a high speed chase; I doubt you were arrested while wearing a bulletproof vest with a cache of weapons in your trunk. I doubt you were arrested with a half empty bottle of alcohol as you sped on your way to commit who knows what kind of crime.

He has shown criminal behavior since he played as OSU. Remember the supposed vehicle 'break in' that he falsified, and tried to claim several thousands of dollars from insurance? Its just the first in a long line of criminal offenses for this serial criminal.

He should be locked up for a substantial period of time, and let him reflect on his choices. His bail was set a a million (though if I was the judge I would have denied it), and he needs to go somewhere where he will be a nobody for a long, long time.

  • Axtell

LOL ! Your right, i did not !

But you make my point, that was not MY enviorment, but i believe it was his.

And i think, if you do the crime,, you do the time.

I`m just saying, all the losses are his. Not mine or yours. Don`t be hateful towards the young man.

personally, i pray for this young man. And it would be the same prayer,,, i would pray for you.

  • I pray for him as well, I knew guys I literally grew up with that thought this same road was theirs. One is still alive, doing a 25 to life bid simply b/c he thought he had to even the score(He was shot in the forehead and was left for dead, came back home and murdered someone in retaliation). Do I feel bad for him, yes and no. He did what he thought he had to do, and that's that. Whatever is running through Clarett's mind, I hope he realizes he has many more friends than enemies in this world, b/c that's how it usually is.

I felt sorry for the kid up until he robbed those people in January.....

    what a waste of talent.

If he had kept his mouth shut, hit the books, sat out his sophomore year, and came back to play at least his junior year......the sky would have been the limit for him.

As I said, he had the world by the balls at one time.

Now, he's nothing more than your run of the mill gun toting thug that will wind up in and out of jail and/or prison for the remainder of his life.

Where is Jim Brown for him now?
  • bri2327bri2327 Posts: 3,178 ✭✭
The enviorment excuse only works to a certain point. He has had ample opportunity to break free of the element of his former enviornment. He made a choice not to. He continues to choose not to. Plenty of people come from similar enviornments and arent criminals. Plenty of people who come from the same enviornment would have given their soul to have the opportunities he has had to remove himself from that life. I dont wish ill will on the guy but I certainly have no sympathy for him either.

Play in Canada or Europe! The kids a thug. You can take him out of the hood but you cant take the hood out of him.

Product of his enviornment? Bull$hit. Everyone, regardless of where they come from, have the ability to make free choices. I knew kids in college from bad enviornments and they were there to make themselves a good life. He had the world by the balls and he screwed up. Time for him to ride off in the sunset and spend some time behind bars. Maybe then he will learn what choices are all about.
  • Geez, let me try this one last time.

I am not saying we should excuse him of his actions.

bri2327, he had only a year away from his past life and friends (his freshmen yr.) do you really feel that was "ample opportunity to break free from his former enviorment" of 18 yrs. ?? Unlikely.

perkdog, you say "forget about that enviorment crap" then in your last sentence you say, "you can take him out of the hood but you can`t take the hood out of him" The hood lifestyle was his "enviorment" !!

yankeeno7, There are always those exceptional people who rise above their circumstances. But obviously, he was not one of those. He has chosn to continue a lifestyle that is no different than the one he grew up in. (his old enviorment)

Its a fact,, not an excuse.

And he is certainly not the only young (black/white) athlete who`s (hiphop/thug) lifestyle has brought them trouble.

    Lee,

You are right, he isnt the only one. But all of these guys have CHOICES. The choose to continue living their enviornment. They are bad seeds in our society and deserve the harshest punishment possible.

I grew up on a farm and lived in a farming community. I made the choice not to farm even though it was my complete enviornment growing up. Some old friends stayed and farmed. Why? Because the CHOOSE the lifestyle. Any one of them could change their life and enviornment at any time if the chose to do so.

He has had his opportunities and threw them away. Now its time to lock him up and throw away the key before he kills someone...like he obviously intended to do.

There are NO excuses for this behavior.

Wow, this one is easy. Look at your upbringing enviorment. Small town farming community. With farming parents.
When you made your choices they were made from an enviorment of 18yrs. of, trust / love / hardwork ethic / edcucation etc..

You were very well set to make life choices.

Grow up in the hood with one parent and its very likely you would have very little, if any, of those life forming/molding factors you were blessed with.

A person generally makes a choice/decision based on what they know or have experienced.

Your enviormental upbringing is so far distant from what his was,,, night and day !

Again, i`m not trying to defend him, or make excuses for him.

Maybe just trying to change some perceptions. I hear so many people speake of his situation with anger and hate in their words and voices, instead of pity and sadness.

NO ONE will suffer more from his actions than he, himself. (barring he would kill someone)

Well said, Lee. I agree with you. Although, Bri, perkdog, yankeeeno7 make compelling arguments and are guys that I respect on here.

I can't help it. I feel sorry for the guy and hate to condemn him. I guess it's just my nature - maybe's its a character fault of mine.

  • yankeeno7yankeeno7 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭
Respectfully, Im not buying that. I dont think it matters what enviornment you grow up in. Many bad people come from farming country too even with a wonderful upbringing. There are many unfortunate kids in the hood with parents trying to raise them right with all the same respect for others and for the world.
Anyone who acts like this deserves the punishment they get. I just have a hard time feeling sorry for someone who needs to pay for the bad things they have done.
  • Yankeeno7

I have worked in prison ministries at a couple different prisions.

The amount of "farm kids" and "from the hood kids" isn`t even close. For every 1 "farm kid" there are easily 30 "from the hood kids" doing hard time.

So real world stats would tend to say i am right.

And thank you for being so polite.

Some farmers are poorer than dirt. Don't own squat and have nothing in savings... They go season to season hoping to make payments on the tractor. Some have little to no education other than how to run a farm. Heck, for some, if their crop gets washed out due to a flood, they have no income for the entire year.

And why should anyone show him any pitty or sadness. Had he followed the rules, he could have continued getting his free education, stayed out of trouble, and probably would have been a top 5 pick this last draft. Instead, he is where he is because of his own actions.

In my humble opinion, there are much more deserving people of my pity than Mo.

    Excellent point Lee.

Maybe we hold Clarett to a higher standard because the opportunity for a better life was right in the palm of his hands. Most would give their left nut to have the opportunities that have been presented to Clarett.

I think that might actually make me feel less sorry for him.
  • AxtellAxtell Posts: 10,037 ✭✭
I just heard he was arrested within a mile of the home of the 2 witnesses who filed charges against him for that robbery attempt in January.

You draw your own conclusions, but he's a mile from the home of the people who could be sending him to jail, and he's got loaded guns, a hatchet, and a bulletproof vest on? It's not a big jump in logic to think he was going there to kill them.

$5 million bail is fair for this guy.

    LEE,

I understand where you are coming from, but I look at it this way.

Yes, he was ONLY a year removed from his friends and surroundings, BUT he was also a guy who knew years before he ever left high school that he had talent. Talent that was shed upon him from the heavens. During his last few years amongst his family, friends, and enviornment he was being groomed for a future of gold, a future everyone around him could never have. Im sure he was told this from the time he was 13 or 14 by many people around him. His last few years of high school could and should have been a time for him to realize he had a chance to become special and to get out of the crap he grew up around. It seems painfully obvious that he ignored the gifts he had and the opportunites that lie ahead of him. It wasnt a shock when he was given a scholorship to play football and a ticket to the good life. He knew it was coming, he knew it was his ticket out all along. To say that he was only a year removed from his enviornment is making an excuse for him. The day he knew his future could and probably will include a free ride to college and a way out he should have made the choice to appreciate it and take full advantage. He chose not to. Nothing that has come since is anyones fault but his own.

And for the record I fully agree with Axtell here. if he was in fact within a mile of the homes of the witnesses when he was arrested then there is no doubt in my mind he was going there to settle a score. Nobody and certainly NOT his enviorment made him do that. Sometimes there are people that are inherently bad regardless of upbringing or enviornment, and he seems to be one.

    HOLY CRAP!!

    SKIP SURFACES!!!image

He had a "loaner" car from a dealership that was broken into and a small amount of stuff was stolen. He falsified a police report and told them the items were valued at 10,000.00. This was found to be a lie and he was charged for it. OSU punished him by stating he would be ineligible for that year. He then decided to try and force his way into the NFL and ultimately lost that....downward spiral ever since.
