The 1909-S wheat pricing and grading....

Their's a thread out there right now concerning the 'practices' of some TPG's. I'd like to offer a different spin on it.....
I recently bought a low grade 09S in a PCGS slab. When I got home I did a research of the Heritage archives to see what other 09S's in that grade sold for recently. I was amazed to see the history of recent sales of that coin at Heritage. If you check the history of sales for that coin in grades VG all the way up to AU you'll see that almost all the coins are in ANACS holders.....I'd say 90% or more. Once you get to the higher grades you'll see more NGC and PCGS slabs but the majority of the coins are still in ANACS holders.
Why is that? Why is the market flooded with that date in ANACS holders?
My guess is the submitters KNOW!...they are SURE!.....they are POSITIVE! that ANACS is the TPG to send your '09S's to when you want a 'generous' grade.
Maybe I'm not reading the archives correctly. If so, please.....someone educate me. But if I am right I think the only logical conclusion is what I just said. The submitters are sure that ANACS looks kindly on that date.
That being said, if so many submitters know the game when it comes to that date, how can anyone not question the 'practices' of the TPG's?
This is not a put down on ANACS by any means. I'm a proud owner of some very fine ANACS coins.
But what does the history say about the date and it's relationship with the big three TPG's?
Thanks for listening.....
Denis

  • ANACS seems to get more circulated coins on Heritage due to 2 factors. 1 . ANACS slabs problem coins. and 2. They have want list to fill and many people looking for circ coins want NGC or PCGS to fit into there sets. Registry or not. Thats just my thoughts.

Another big factor is that for years, ANACS was significantly cheaper than the other two services. For a key date circulated coin that is under $200 in value, where authenticity and not grade is the biggest factor, paying a few bucks less to certify makes a lot of sense.
