Lost Job - Ebay Protocol For Canceling Bids

I just lost my job. I currently have some bids on Ebay. They won't end until 4 days from now. I cann't afford to pay for them if I am the high bidder. When I cancel the bids - what reason should I list for the cancelation? I will definitely email the seller with the reason for the bid cancelation. Any advice with how to do this? How would you react to a buyer doing this to you? Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear you've lost your job. Unfortunatly I've never canceled any bids on eBay, so I wouldn't be able to assist. I do wish you the best of luck in finding a new position though!

Email the sellers and tell them what happened. If you have good feedback they should understand. Ask them to cancel your bids, it looks better for everyone if they do that.

If they don't cancel or don't respond then go ahead and retract your bids, and put down "unable to contact seller".

Some might lump you in with the group that always has relatives dying and the other group that has computer breakdowns all the time. It's better that you handle it before the end than wait for the auction to end and then not pay.

Good luck with the job search, and I'm sorry you lost the one you had.

  • Normally when a buyer contact me to retract a bid, I will not do it. Most of the times they are doing it to avoid having retractions. Although there are some exceptions. Really under Ebay rules losing your job is not a valid reason to cancel a bid, so you can try the contact seller option to retract. That seller can report you for invalid retraction, but it is unlikely that Ebay will do anything. I saw a buyer a few months ago that had 150 retractions in 6 months so either those sellers have not been reporting him or that ID is being used as a bid shield (a buyer using 2 IDs to bid on the same item then retracting at the last moment possible to get it at a cheaper price.)

I do have about 10 to 15 IDs on my BBL that were bid retractors most retracted for invalid reason like seller changed description when I did not or "entered wrong bid amount" then like they are suppoused to do according to Ebay fail to rebid with the correct amount.
  • If you hit the "help" tab on any ebay screen and type "cancel bid" for your search, you will be provided with the instructions you need to cancel your bid. You can try to contact the seller first in hopes of him canceling your auction thus (if he does so, it will not count on your record as a retraction). However, as a seller everytime I had a buyer email me with a story as why they want me to cancel their bid.....I played hard ball with them and made them do it on their own. I'm not a very trusting person, so I don't take excuses very kindly from people I don't know. In your situation, I obviously believe you and I do hope the seller cancels the bid for you. I also wish you the best of luck finding a new and better job.
    good luck.

I think it makes a big difference if the auction is ending soon, or if it's a big money thing they have been trying to sell. If somebody asks me to cancel their bid and they don't have a lot of retractions I don't have a problem with it, but if they have retractions or they're stupid in the email I won't do it.

what were you bidding on? Maybe somebody here would buy what you were bidding on, or maybe it's something you could flip right away and not lose much? (if the sellers won't cancel for you)

  • First, sorry to hear about your job situation. Good luck with that.

As a seller, I have never had anybody ask me to cancel a bid. Under the circumstances, I would have no problem canceling a bid. As mentioned in earlier posts, do contact the seller asap- better earlier than near the close of the auction. Maybe I'm one of them image. I think the seller would feel more at ease if the cancelations are made with a few days left to give prospective buyers more time to view their auctions at the lower price. If the seller does not cancel the bid, then just do what you need to do.

i cancelled two bids when i realized i already owned the card. it was several days ahead of closing. it stays on your ebay account 6 months. nothing to sleep over.
  • nothing to sleep over.

Even though I have never seen or heard of it happening your account can be suspended for too many bid retractions.

  • The total amount (at my high ) is just over $50.00 for all 4 items. On 3 of them - I have both bought and sold from the seller (Coney Island Sportscards - has my highest recommendation). I'm sure I'll be okay with them. The 4th item is with someone I never dealth with before. I was hoping I would be outbid. There are still 4 days until the auctions end. Thanks for your replies.

I think you can get suspended for too many bid retractions, but judging by your concern to do this, I'm certain you don't do it often enough to worry about it.

Just go to your eBay and cancel your bid, the reason can be you bid the wrong amount, it doesn't matter. Just get it cancelled.

A seller probably won't be too upset if you do it with four days left. That's plenty of time for other bids. Either way, if you've lost your job, take care of yourself/your family first. The seller would be more upset if you won the auction and couldn't pay.

    Just my two cents.

I had someone email me with the exact same situation (lost Job). They were very polite and apologetic and offered to pay the eBay fees for the auction. I cancelled their bid (Many more people bid anyway). I would rather they do this than have a problem after the auction is over. If people try to be decent, I try to help. About 6 months later this person got back on their feet and bid successfully on several of my auctions, so I have gained a regular, fast paying customer.
  • My ebay ID is WarHoundR69 - I have no bid retractions ever. Got 3 Negs in my first few months and 1 since then. Over 800 positive, but only 340 from individual users. My rating is 98.9% Positive. Is this a bad feedback standing in Ebay Land - for sellers when I ask them to cancel my bids?

I would just cancel the bids on my own and you could email the sellers what happened. if i had just lost my job my bid cancel's on ebay would not be a concern of mine.
