NGC Maundy sets MULTI-COIN HOLDER

Well... its official...

NGC is grading Maundy sets in a multi-coin slab if one desires. I received my submissions back today and I am pleased with the slab, but they were alittle harsh on the 1896 set ( 2 were 63s and 2 were 64s which was disappointing...) The 1920 set and 1905 set did well.

The other submissions turned out okay including a 1693-A 1/2 Ecu that was graded MS61.

Great news. I have a bunch of sets I want in the multi-coin holder. Does the holder say 'Maundy Set' on it?

yes... and it is done well. The holder maybe alittle large for the coins but I think it works considering the label and what is required on it. I like the way the coins are encapsulated... the rim of the coin is well separated from the traditional white color of the NGC slab. I am impressed.

I believe they do a similar trick with their regular multiholder. The transparent circles are all of equal size:

    1920 - MS67 for all except a 66 for the 4d

1905 MS67 for all except either the 2d or 4d... and that was 66.

I also submitted a 1906 set with results of MS65 and MS63 (2 graded at each grades)

I really liked all of these sets and thought the 1896 set was hosed...

Will they do British Specimen sets also?
  • Do PCGS do them too ?

I also have a Maundy Set I'd like to have slabbed.

Picked it up at a bargain price in Italy. image

It is my understanding that PCGS doesn't have a multi-coin holder for Maundy Sets.

Today I sent NGC three sets for grading and multi-coin holdering:
    1901
    1905
    1958

I also sent in a previously NGC slabbed set (1898) for reholdering in their multi-coin Maundy Set holder.

PCGS barely has multi-coin holders. They exist but they don't advertise the fact and you almost NEVER see them. At first they were only for the four piece gold proof set, but they have also had some used for five piece state quarter sets. You woud probably have to go through customer service to get them, they are not mentioned anywhere on the PCGS website.

Well, a searh on the website will turn up a couple references but only in the forums and two of those have been deleted, The only official mention of them is from HRH in a Q&A thread from Nov 2003.
  • Ooh! Will someone please post a pic? I do want this for mine. It would be cool if they could open the little box, lay it flat, and somehow include it in the slab!

Xprobe, here's a picture of one on ebay. Text
  • Thanks BS. Inline picture below.

I was concerned that the holder might be too big, and the little coins would just be lost against an overwhelming background. But it looks like a good size after all.

Some of mine have prooflike surfaces and great toning. I'm having trouble capturing both of those properties at the same time in photos. I suppose it will be even more difficult once they are in plastic...
