Vince Papale 1977 Topps Rookie (Player from the new Invincible movie) Sell now or wait?

This movie comes out August 25th. There have been a few on ebay selling for about $25 or $30 most in EX or NM. I have a nice MINT one, should I sell now or wiat until the movie comes out and list then? I think I would get more when everyone sees the movie and searches for him, but I am sure after seeing the movie a lot of people will look for them in their collection to post on eBay and possibly flood the market. I am pretty sure that the 1977 Rookie is his only card. What do you guys think- sell now or after August 25th??

Funny. I was wondering the same thing for the couple that I have. I'm leaning toward getting them up soon before the flood comes.

Thats my thinking as well. I am trying to remember how it played out with jimmy morris and "The Rookie" film.

I'd sell after the movie's first week of release. It should be #1 or close. I'm kicking myself because when I first saw the trailer about amonth ago I was thinking I should pick up as many of his RCs (if he had one) just in case of exactly what's happening now, but I never followed through.

I grew up in Philadelphia but I have to say I never heard of this guy until the other day. My friend asks me if I know anything about this movie "Invincible." At first I thought he was talking about a movie version of the great comic book, but I would've heard about that. He then proceeds to tell me the story of the guy and the movie in minute detail. But he's asking me if I have any more information about it. He's always doing this. Anyway, I don't think there will be any kind of huge rush of non-colelctors from the theater into card shops looking for this card, so list it to end the Sunday of opening weekend with a sizable but not unreasonable BIN.

    Only 5 of this card have been submitted. There's 1- 7 , 3- 8s and 1- 9.

$31.00 for an exmt card is crazy. Now that its posted here you will see a huge influx of these listed. Lotsa lurkers steal ideas brought up here but we also have a way of influencing the market at times. Kind of crazy.

I first heard about this movie probably 4 months ago and kept a look out on eBay for this card, and they were very scarce up until about a month ago. I was able to pick up all of two, and I bid fairly agressively relative to the fact they they were 1977 Topps FB commons in ex-mt to nrmt condition. I've not seen any on eBay yet in a PSA slab (I sent one in myself for the June special). I think there were actually more of the Mexican versions that popped up over the period I was watching for them.

Sigh. Yeah, I saw this trailer a month ago and thought "Gee, I should scoop up some of his cards if I can and flip them on Ebay when the movie comes out." Got side tracked, and now a 30 cent card is selling for $30. Oh well.

I wonder how long this will keep up. When the movie "The Rookie" came out, how big of a spike did Jim Morris cards experience?

Are there any cards of Rudy (Notre Dame)? image

Jim Morris cards took off after The Rookie. I'd wait a few weeks until opening weekend, then have them scheduled to end opening weekend.

I'd start your auction about 3-4 days before the movie opens, so people can go home and see one ending soon, before most of them are listed.

    Wikipedia entry for Vince Papale

Coach Dick Vermeil is also associated with another guy who came out of obscurity to play in the NFL, Kurt Warner.

Some of the user reviews I saw on Yahoo had titles like "Degrading to Italians" "Vince is no longer allowed in little italy" "Its supposed to be a movie right......" but i am too lazy to sign up to read the full review.

    SELL SELL SELL
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

By the way, it absolutely boggles my mind how Hollywood can make movie about a college kid who had one career sack (Rudy) and a pro receiver who had 1 career reception, yet Ernie Davis, who won the Heisman trophy (first black man to do so?) and died of Leukemia 2 years later after never playing a down in the NFL, is largely unknown to people outside the sports world...and many in it.

  • My suggestion would be to list your auction so its end date is one to three days after the movie opens.

Just a follow up that I sold mine when I made this post and got $26. Now there are over 100 on eBay and they are getting $3- $10 each. So I guess selling very early was the best move. Thanks for everyones input.

I sold mine about 10 days ago listed it in my store with a BIN of $15.99, It sold within three days. It was probably an ex card.
