Is there anything that can be done to silver once its been cleaned?

lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,358 ✭✭✭✭✭
There's a Capped Bust Half at my local dealers shop that's been cleaned to the point where it's a shiny silver color. I don't know how the cleaning occured...dipped, whizzed, whatever. My question is, is there anything that can be done [short of putting it in a leather purse for 100 years] to restore the original patina?

Thanks,

Leo

pocket piece, if you don't mind wearing away a little detail over time.
Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

I've soaked Morgans before in bleach to remove the over polished look coins in those framed wall type hanging sets have. It brought them back to more of a dull silver appearance which was a heck of alot better than that almost plated look they had. Don't know if I would want to try it on a bust coin however.
  • How about instead of further chemicals you put them in an old album and let them tone naturally? Wayte Raymond album for instance.

The coin I'm looking at has F12/15 details...if I put it in an album would it re-tone in my lifetime??

Wear it down a little and let it retone over time.

depends on what you want done to it.
you want it to look more like it should for the grade? bury it in the backyard for awhile maybe?
or carry it around all the time as your pocket-piece
use it to cast a nice piece of jewelry?

An acetone soak or a quick dip in EZest or MS70 might remove any polish buildup. Then put it in an album and lock away in the dark somewhere.

If it's whizzed or otherwise polished there is no alternative to wearing
it down a little. Very heavily polished coins may need to be worn two
full grades to appear natural. Lightly cleaned pieces can just be allowed
to darken or tone to hide the work.

Put it in a container full of matchheads. Check it every few weeks.

Thanks for the insights... this might be a cheap experiment. Leo
