Zimbabwe currency 'reform'

They slashed 3 zeroes off the currency which still doesn't help much of the population.

"...an ecstatic housewife hails the currency change saying a loaf of bread which cost 200,000 Zimbabwe dollars 'now costs only 200 dollars.'"

They forgot to show the part where her husband discovers his $10,000,000 paycheck is now only $10,000.

Ah, the Zimbabwian Dollar - another example of money so worthless that its not worth the paper they're printed on, even with 3 zeros lopped off. This money reform will surely crash and burn!

I guess the hyper-inflation has its good side...............

    (1) Zimbabwean school children are probably better at dealing with higher numbers that those in the U.S.
    (2) Zimbabwe can claim the #1 spot in historical inflation, beating out post-WW1-Germany, several South American countries in the late 20th Century, etc. (If you can't beat them in soccer, beat them here!)
    (3) Zimbabwean mattresses are much more comfortable with all the added stuffing of hoarded bills

But, of course, there's a downside as well.................

    (3) They miss out on savings that would come from smaller & cheaper-to-produce coins due to the number of zeroes
    (4) If you think U.S. currency referred to as "horseblankets" was big - - you should see the size THEIRS must be to handle all the zeroes!
    (5) 100 trillion Z$ just doesn't buy as much these days........
    (6) How does any financial software work when amount fields are usually limited to a "reasonable " size? Did all code have to be mitigated to "pack" display fields? Was THAT even enough?
    (7) There were several injuries outside the local "Nothing over Z$1000000000000000000" store when the building's storefront could not support the weight of the sign
    (8) Go-go dancers could no longer fit enough bills in their g-strings to make dancing worthwhile

As far as we collectors are concerned, does that mean eBay sellers will be lopping-off 3 zeroes from their prices anytime soon?

  • The highest denomination that has been issued since the so-called 'currency reform' is now the $1,000,000 note.

Y'know, hyperinflation currency might make an interesting paper money collection. I'm sure it's been done.

Say, nothing with a denomination lower than 100,000...

The saddest thing is, of course, that this thread is over two years old, now... and it's still true. If anything, it's far worse today than when it was first posted.

Add to that the fact that Zimbabwe really has had a serious toilet paper shortage because of embargoes, the new currency can double as butt wipe now.

  • David,
Saying that Zimbabwe has gone down the pan is an understatement. It is heading down into the sewer.Nothing will change as far as issuing banknotes will go.The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe will keep on importing both ink & paper in from Commie China for the foreseeable future.
