Another "eyeball" find... what are the odds of finding silver laying on the sidewalk?!

This was a first for me. Now I've found countless coins on the ground over the years. I've even found bills (including one "Ben" as I got out of my car to go detecting one morning... was getting ready to meet DemoDigger that morning). But, I've never found a silver coin laying on the ground (excluding demo's where the ground had been tilled up... or in received change).

This was found right in the middle of the sidewalk yesterday. I was walking back to my car when I noticed a coin up ahead. As I went to pick it up, I thought "that looks like silver." (has that darker look as a silver starts to tarnish)

I was thinking about PPC's post about finding the "C-note" the other day, and thought that I've found one of those on the ground but never silver. (I'm figuring both are probably pretty rare "eyeball" finds today, but of course I'd rather have the 100 bucks image)

So, out of curiosity, how many of you have eyeballed silver on the ground before? (not including coins in a demo site) Might be an interesting poll to see what everyone finds when it comes to the "eyeball" category.

Fun find, but I was telling my wife it was odd... I think I'd rather have dug it. She said she could see that... kinda took the fun out of it. But I'll still take it. image

Hope everyone had a good weekend.
HH, Rick

I never found one out in the "open". But I do think I would rather have dug it also!

  • Great find. image

I found a 500 yen coin on the subway and only because it's a larger coin but never US silver.

    Good eyes.
  • Once when I was detecting at my great aunt's after a rain, I saw a coin laying on the ground right before my coil swung over it and it turned out to be a '41 Merc.
    I lust for silver.

  • While detecting in an old park one day, the detector sounded off with a good signal and I bent over to notice a blackened '61 dime lying in the grass. Looks like it had been there forever.
  • I found one on the floor of the barracks in Japan... just laying there. Had another guy trying to use one in the vending machine also in Japan... and it wouldnt take it.. so I traded him, and sure enough... another one.
  • Thanks for the replies everyone. image

Interesting to hear of the different cases...
Finding coins (even bills) in public places seems to be common. (private yards, stores, parking lots, work, malls, subways, etc)

  • my trained eyes have found many coins. i've eye'd several walker halves. if we're not including demo's , then i guess i've only eye'd 1 walker. that was at that school up in fremont.

I found a darken Rosie on the floor in front of a vending machine. When I first saw it I just figured it was clad as usual but it was silver. That's my only road kill silver.
  • I've eyeballed a number of coins while arrowhead hunting. I found a Barber quarter at the edge of a field once, and a 2 cent piece along with a few V nickels (all were separate finds). I also found a Mercury dime on a job site, but that's kinda in the demo catagory.

About a year ago I found two US dimes on the sidewalk near where I live.
One was recent, the other a 1955 silver.

Pretty high, if you're somebody who sucks, like Riccar. image

Happened to me, once, around 1979. I found a mangled 1959-D dime in the parking lot of my grandmother's apartment complex. Another time I was out detecting and spotted a 1948 quarter on the surface. It was mounted in a keychain bezel, though, and obviously was a recent drop.

  • Sounds like it happens... I knew DemoDigger is crazy when it comes to eye-balling finds at demos, but after reading the replies, I think eye-balling silver is something "sort of" common for the treasure hunter trained eyes.

(hearing about "eye-balled" silver halves and a Barber quarter though... WOW!)

  • i was at the bank the other day getting my pennies counted and a girl opened up a night deposit bag. i saw a silver dime in it and asked her if i could have it.she lost it and poured them out and there were 9 silver dimes in the bag. a week earlier i was counting pennies and i heard the half dollar bag sound funny so i looked in it and got 2 franklin halves, and last week the same girl saved me a nice silver kenedy hallf. so i,ve found a little bit lately. later greg
  • That is real sweet!

A few weeks ago, I collected money for the office lottery pool and someone gave me a handful of change that contained a 1964 dime.

Twice, I've eyeballed Buffalo nickels on the ground. Once when I was a kid, before I was ever a detectorist. Found a 1936.

Another time while out detecting I spotted a nickel in the sand before I even swung the coil over it. It was a dateless Buffalo.

  • My wife found a 1907 Indian Head cent, laying in plain site in the Winn Dixie parking lot.....Can't imagine how it got there...
  • I could understand a silver Roosevelt being dropped today due to the way it looks (similar to modern clad except for the mint mark placement)...
    But an IH!?? image

Were the buffalo's on an old path? I've heard of one area out here where V-nickels have been eyeballed.

Franklin halves must have come from granny or grandpa dropping money off at the bank (after sitting in a change jar for a few decades). Those would be a fun find.

By the way, anyone hear anything about the valuable coins that the guy dropped into circulation on purpose? Any of those been found yet?
