StuartStuart Posts: 9,762 ✭✭✭✭✭
I purchased this very attractive and well-struck 1921 Peace Dollar during today's Bellaire (Houston) Coin Show and thought that you may enjoy seeing her and perhaps also take a shot at playing this latest installment of Guess the Grade.

Please also post your comments and observations about this coin to keep the thread lively and active. Thanks in advance for your participation. image

  • I went 60 until I saw the reverse- is that a hit on the 2nd L in dollar or is that an error?

    Looks sharp for a '21.

Lustre seems subdued in the pic.

    I'm in for a MS 64.

    I'll go with a 64 as well....

It has the strike of a 65 and a very nice look. I have a 64 that looks identical to yours and I have tried to get it into a 65 holder several times..TPG's seem to be tough on the '21's when they get to Gem grades.

That's a deep dish, but the mark coming out of Miss Liberty's forehead gives it a 64.

    MS64. Great strike.
  • There's a few linear marks in the obverse fields and a small tick on Liberty I don't know it's just streaky toining or what. I do find the strike to be in the top 90% for the date--certainly worth 3/4 grade increase given how mushy and unattractive these can be. My first impression is that there are some distractions/abrasions on that all important cheek---but it has a very PQ "Crisp" fresh look--so MS64 is my best shot.--
    ----------------
    ----------
By the way--be VERY careful on these because they pick up very tiny thin hairline staple- marks that are very hard to see except a the right angles, light, etc.

As an investment these haven't moved at bit in 3 years compaired to the 1928-P semi keys (in 64/65). So they do have good potential for the right eye-appealing coin IMHO> image There is also a bigger spread than you'd think between PCGS/NGC so picking a coin that will really cross--- no questions-- is something to be looking at-----

My guess is MS64. Its a great strike, but it has a few minor hits and marks on it. I'd say NGC/ANACS would go MS64, but PCGS would place MS63 on this one. Great looking coin though!

That's a 64 and might even go 65 because of the strike. Strikes like that are so uncommon on '21 Peace dollars, I could easily see it in a 65 slab, from either service.

Great strike, and muted luster. The image makes the reverse look lightly mottled. MS63 coin with MS65 strike. NGC MS64.

I like it as a MS64. Worth a premium for that strike! Nice one.

63+ if no rub with the typical ugly muted lustre

with an almost average strike over the ear

Wow -- this thread has sure been lively since I last looked Saturday evening!!

I guess that many other forum members also appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of these higher relief 1921 Peace Dollars as one year type coins, or as parts of the Peace Dollar Date Set.

While considering this coin, I had the opportunity to compare it with a couple of other coins graded one point higher, and this one blew both of them away especially on strike, but also on luster.

Michael: The luster on this coin is satiny bright with lots of luster play when the coin is rotated in the light and well above average for a 1921 Peace Dollar. Since the metal flow pattern is different from Morgans, it does not exhibit classic cartwheel luster patterns, but more of a round circle of light that rotates around the coin when it's rotated in the light.

When I purchase coins in person, the two things that I will not compromise on are strong original (not dipped out) mint luster, and above average (to strong) strike. I have succeeded on both of those objectives with this purchase. However, I do agree that my photo does not do a good job of catching the full mint bloom of this coin.

Thanks to all who participated in this latest inaugural Peace Dollar episode of Guess the Grade. I appreciate all 88 who voted in the poll, and thank those who also took the time to post their comments and observations about this pretty coin in the thread.

The distribution of votes was tightly grouped, with 26% nailing the grade, and almost half of the votes (49%) guessing one grade higher.
Another way of tallying the votes is to say that 63.5% voted higher than MS-63, and only 10% voted lower
      MS-66 or Higher 4 (votes) 4.55 (%) MS-65 9 (votes) 10.23 (%) MS-64 43 (votes) 48.86 (%) MS-63 23 (votes) 26.14 (%) MS-62 1 (votes) 1.14 (%) MS-61 0 (votes) 0.00 (%) MS-60 1 (votes) 1.14 (%) AU-58 or Lower 7 (votes) 7.95 (%)
Several of us who have discussed this feel that the only reason that this coin was graded MS-63 is likely because of very minor hairline scratches that are very hard to resolve even with a bit of magnification and the right lighting, held the coin back to MS-63.

This was to my advantage since in my opinion (and to my eyesight) they do not in any way reduce the stunning eye appeal of this coin, and made it available to me at a more affordable price than if the slab label had MS-64 on it. image

The strike on this Peace Dollar is hammered no matter what the grade, and the mint luster is exceptional. image
