I am not crazy about the all-white, overdipped look to it. However, the sharp strike is so fantastic it almost looks fake.
(Mind you, I'm not suggesting it is- I see no obvious red flags but there's a tiny hint of that "looks too good to be true" factor, if you know what I mean.)
If it is real, then it is worth having for that crisp, well-centered strike.
I'm with LordMarcovan on this one - I see no obvious red flags as well, but I have only handled a couple of these before and don't have as much experience yet.
Guys, I far from being an expert on this subject, but doesn't the "the all-white, overdipped look" described by the LordMarcovan lend itself to be salt-water damage. It looks like some of the sea salvaged coins to me.
Yes, I suppose a sea-salvaged coin that had been electrolytically cleaned would have that all-white look. I suppose I am just used to seeing these in a darker grey. (Seeing pictures of them, that is- I have never had one in hand).
It appears to be quite genuine to me. It's a late series 4 reale, MG assayers marks and struck about 1542. As for the color it has likely been dipped. Re: value - approx $500 - $600.
Here is a genuine example, same date/same assayer -
(It did happen, to a fella in Louisiana or somewhere along the Gulf Coast, a few years ago. He found a C & J four-reales piece.)
PS- I just saw a movie (in Spanish, subtitled) on the Sundance or IFC channel, about them. What was it called? Hm. "Juana La Loca", or something like that.

What I can see from that photo looks o.k., but it is not large enough for me to make a useful comment.

Thanks for the help everyone.
