Hoops outside the USA continues to grow by leaps and bounds. The talent level of foreign teams is amazing and watching them play TEAM basketball is a joy. 20 years from now the NBA will be a global league (maybe the World Basketball Association, aka the WBA).

However, the USA still has great basketball players. If a USA National team practices for more than two weeks and if it functions as a Team (instead of 12 Superstars who pout if they do not play the entire game and take every shot) with all players having a single mindset of winning by completely demolishing every team that they play against, I can see where the USA may once again dominate the sport.

What do you think?

Almost 27 hours had passed since I posted this thread.

Not a bite yet. Jeeze, too many baseball fans are on this forum. Baseball is BORING (Flame away).

Come around to hoops folks and respond to my post. Ahh, hoops, now that is a real sport with real athletes (Flame away again).
  • Well, I watched the first exhibition against Puerto!!! RICO!!!! lol and the team definetly made a strong showing and came together in the last half. I personally think this will be another Dream Team. A young core, that together no team(foreign nation, or world) can stop if they play together as a team instead of And-1 bs.

I also watched the USA play Puerto Rico. It is amazing to see how utterly ineffective Puerto Rico was when the USA decided to play defense. The speed, quickness, agressiveness and anticipation exhibited by the USA when it decided to clamp down defensively was amazing to watch. The defense opened up things and let the USA run away with the game.

I hope to watch the other upcoming games. If the Puerto Rico game was not a fluke and if the USA team decides to play the same way in future games, the teams from other nations better bring their "A" game.

This team is extremely exciting and there has been a concerted effort focused on both talent and chemistry. I like the fact that the majority of the players can "bring it" both outside and inside. Only a few "position" players. This flexibility in the lineup makes it difficult for any opponent to plan a strategy. Also, the younger core of players had already established some personal friendships, which has helped jumpstart the "team" concept.

A huge plus is the coaching staff. Mike K is as good as it gets, and the assistant coaches chosen are sound team fundamentalists.

As far as the "athletic" aspect of players within team sports, that one can be debated for eternity. Each sport requires differnet skills in conjunction with athleticism. For example, nobody can debate that Michael Jordan was an unreal athlete....but he didn't have the eye/hand coordination necessary to cut it in MLB.

This championship should be fun. The NBA was a complete joke last spring with it's officials bending over backwords to make sure Cuban didn't get the trophy. The US finally looks like it has put together a roster with most of it's best players. Hopefully that will translate to gold, I'm sick of the US sucking at sports internationally.

The officials weren't 'bending over backwards' to keep Cuban from the trophy - the players did it all on their own. Dirk even admited that Cuban was a distraction, and it surely affected the players.

As far as the international team, there should be a group of guys who is the national team, and as players retire, bring in new talent - that way, its not starting over fresh every single time. Just keep the same core group, then switch in and out players so they have some chemistry.
