The American League

All smack aside ........ how crazy is it that the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox have the number TWO and THREE best winning percentages in all of Major League Baseball and BOTH of them have a realistic scenerio where they don't even make the playoffs. Obviously one of them will but man ....... talk about lopsided leagues at this point as far as raw winning %'s go .....

No doubt the AL is the far superior league this year. I'm just happy to be a Mets fan! If we were were in the AL East, we'd be in third place!

Very possible that the NL wildcard team will be barely .500 while the AL wildcard team might have 95 wins.

Does anyone think the Tigers can handle the postseason with their young roster? Everyone's been waiting for them to fade but it now looks like they may take the Central. They've got some young pitching staff with elder statesman Rogers to boot!

  • I think they should shorten the baseball season to 156 games or so and have another Wild Card team in each league. Then there could be a best 2 out of 3 Wild Card series. The baseball season is way to long how it is.

Leland did it with the Marlins(I think); so I definetly think a young pitching staff(with a guy like Rogers to help hold it together along with a veteran superstar catcher in IRod. Add to the that the veteran bats I think they have a good shot.

The AL is awesome. I also cheer for the Mets, so this year has been quite good to me.

I think the Tigers are for REAL. I also hope that they don't thin they can TRUST Kenny Rogers in the post season

Yes, Met fans still get ticked when they recall him walking in the winning run to lose the NLCS in 1999. Clutch he's not.

Very true, soft, surprised he never took his frustration out on a cameraman under the bright lights in NY, either!

We don't need another wild card team, but shortening the season is definitely a good idea.

  • perkdogperkdog Posts: 30,661 ✭✭✭✭✭
Agreed. A shorter season would be nice but forget about another wildcard, the last thing we need is the playoff system to resemble hockey's.

The Tigers resemble their record, they are for real!
  • I would like to see another wild card, but I'll admit that it is just because I'm tired of seeing my Blue Jays finish third every year.

I have to agree about the American League.

The Cardinals are stinking it up right now. With me watching them nearly every night, it feels like they are in last place, but they are 2.5 games in first place. Weird. It just doesn't feel right since they have won over 100 games the last 2 years. Very, frustrating. It would not surprise me if the Cardinals don't make the playoffs this year.

I would really like to see the Tigers make some type of Waiver Deal as Boston did to get Javy Lopez.I think the Tigers could use another arm especially with the struggles Fernando Rodney has had lately maybe a guy like Jose Mesa or Bobby Howery.

With the Jays losing regularly, apparently Scott Schoeinweiss and Justin Speier - who are both free agents after the season - are available. Speier would be a great pickup for any contender. He is one of the most underrated setup men in the league.

I agree with you regarding Speier. I picked him up on my fantasy team early in the year so Ive been tracking him....would love to see the Yanks pick him up.

Spier would be a great pickup as would Schoeinweiss for the Tigers however I do not think they can quite afford to throw in the towel quite yet. They spent (OVERSPENT) on players this past off season and need to at least challange until they are automatically elimanted.

Soft... and back on topic. I understand the premise. When you look at the league leaders in the AL/NL and the divisions, I don't see the Yanks and Sox as being so dominant that it should call for a revision of MLB policy.. Dominant to me is closer to what the Tigers are accomplishing - winning close to 7 out of 10 games. The rest of it is about winning more games than your competitors, and in the case of the Yanks/Sox winning 6 out of 10.

The Tigers will have trouble closing out playoff games vs. either the Yanks or Red Sox. Todd Jones will not hold up to constant post season pressure, but it's not a simple task to keep games with them close every night. The guy they bring in for the 7th and 8th (Zumaya) is VERY good. They are the best team in the league but anything can happen in a short series.

Growing up in the '80s I hated the NL, so this is way more fun than watching the Pirates, Phillies, Cards, Mets, Reds, and Dodgers win World Series.
