Silver Sharpie

I recently won an auction from Coaches Corner for an autographed Tony C Sports Illustrated. When I received the magazine the signature was done with a silver sharpie. Tony C had his stroke in 1982. Were sharpies used back then? I have several Tony C signatures and they are all in ballpoint. Something about this autograph doesn't seem right. Should I be concerned about authenticity? Or were sharpies in use before 1982? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • The only explanation I could come up with is that it was done in silver paint pen, which is probably unlikely. Any way you can scan this so we can take a look?

according to sanford they came out with the extra fine in 1979 in 4 colors, not including silver. The ultra fine real skinny one came out in 1989.

I don't think the silver metallic came out till way later, you can call them to ask 1-800-323-0749.

I remember in 7th grade, which was 1982-83, I had a pen that not only wrote in silver ink but also created an outline of the silver in red as you wrote. It was really cool, but went dry quickly and I never saw another like it. But suffice to say if we could put a man on the moon in 1969 (and let's not have that debate again) he could have signed the magazine in silver in 1982, or earlier. But even afte rhis stroke, did he permanently lose the ability to sign his name?
