"Player to be named later" trades

Do these annoy you too? Do they ever include anyone of note and why do they do it this way anyway?
Wise men learn more from fools than fools learn from the wise.

  • Basically the team that accepts such a deal is given a list(usually of minor leaguers); as well as given a date to choose someone off of the list.

You can almost be GUARANTEED that said list won't have a blue chipper ANYWHERE in sight. Yes Jersey, they are annoying. Its not even worth following up to see which player was actually traded .

Mike Piazza was a 62nd round draft pick!

  • Yep, that is what I meant. I have heard other stories similar to Piazza. Doesn't happen that often but it happens.

True, but he was a draft pick. Not some poor sap who has found his way on to a "player to be named later" list well after being drafted ....

Liriano is a great example. Piazza, though, would never have been drafted (with the last pick) if it weren't for Lasorda doing Piazza's pop a favor, and who knows if Mike would have even played professional baseball if it weren't for that.

The same can be said for a ton of sons of former greats. Not saying they are not talented on their own merit...but you know what I'm sayin.

True, but how many of them are blessed with connections and incredible untapped talent? I don't recall anyone other than Piazza even approaching the Major League level, unless of course you count Dale Berra! image

  • I doubt many succeeded with such a resounding thud as Piazza. Also, at that time the Dodgers weren't...lets say the pick of the litter. But he damn sure impressed when he made it to the big show.
