FRANC vs AMERICAN QUARTER

I picked up a few rolls of quarters at the bank and while going through them I came across this FRANC. I was just wondering, is this coin completely worthless considering the Euro? imageimage

    Not completely worthless.
1991 1 franc is about 20 cents in XF.
    Unfortunately yours has obverse damage.

They exist in both medal and coin alignment.

I found a few of those on my change.

I know what you mean I have got them in my change as quarters and when checking Krause they aren't even worth a quarter.

I got ripped off! But I still kept them thinking after the Euro they'll triple in price.
    Yet still they're less then a quarter.image

Sorry! That's probably half my fault!

As a kid on an American base in Germany years and years ago, we'd always shove these in video games and vending machines to save 12 or so cents... yeah, we were brats! image

Now in 300 years or so they could be worth more than a quarter image

Hmm, naughty to use on the video games, but why not keep an old tradition going? I seem to recall people using the old copper nickel peso for quarters also...

I believe the French coins are one of the few to have been repudiated by the issuer.
Indeed the 10F ($1.70) coin was demonetized several years ago with very little notice.
French coins which were still valid had a very short window for redemption so many
did not get turned in for destruction.

These coins have always seemed exceedingly common in unc and nice examples are
ubiquitous in poundage. Prices in Krause have never even hinted that any might be
scarce. Sometimes I'm not so sure. While there have been large numbers of mint sets
made so these can never be rare it appears these coins may have been as overlooked
as most post WWII issues. There are some very low mintage issues which bring a very
small premium which is a tipoff to the fact that people never collected them.

You're out a quarter and circulated examples will be common for decades at least (pro-
    bably much longer).
