in Ottawa.....

Got there and while we waited outside snapped these few pics.... Paid 5.50 or so for the boy and I to take the "tour".

My definition of tour as it relates to the RCM is a short guided walk that eventually leads you to the "boutique" or sales area.

The tour was LAME LAME LAME!!!!! There was no one working. They must have been on shut down or on a maintenance week....they did have a few piles of gold and silver laying where you could see them but the only machines operating were the cash register to get in and the registers at the shop (which you could not enter unless you took the tour). No cameras permitted inside for security reasons. Security of what?

I did learn that the only coins that are minted at the Ottawa facility are the "collector" coins made from bullion. The rest of the coinage is minted in Winnepeg (I think she said). My boy was not amused that I forced him to let me take the quarter pictures.

We drove around Ottawa a bit afterwards and I am convinced that nearly the entire city smokes and that they are almost always on a smoke break outside. LOL.

Personally, I'd rather go to Montreal and tour(hic) the Molson Brewery. And I don't collect bottle caps. Just church keys.image

Goose: I've been to Ottawa before, and found it to be a beautiful old European style city -- great for walking. However, I was not able to tour the RCM while there.

Based upon your experience, perhaps that was not as big a loss as I thought it was at the time...

  • When I was there a couple of years back, it was more interesting when the workers were there doing their "thing". I have a feeling Winnipeg would be more interesting for the kids, however, as most if not all Canadian circulation coins are made there. Ottawa is to the RCM, as what San Francisco/West Point are to the US Mint. Mostly proofs and precious metal coinage.

I also thought it was pretty lame that they did not even have some sort of measely handout for the young kids in attendance.

    Oh well. Live and Learn.

Those of you that have been in Ottawa....am I right about the smokers or what?image

It's a cool looking building. It's good you made your kid pose. Adults are supposed to embarrass their children. image

Have you been endarkened by your trip? At least join the grey side.

I'd like to go some day just to see where my George V Canadian coins came from. I get the feeling there's a lot more to do in Ottawa than in Winnepeg, also.

<< <i>Adults are supposed to embarrass their children. >>

Is that why when they get older they then get even by doing things that embarrass their parents?
