Is "PQ" a misused designation?

dizzyfoxxdizzyfoxx Posts: 9,823 ✭✭✭
I see a lot of coins advertised as well as at shows where the price tag sticker or description also states that the coin is PQ.
Many I have seen don't seem to be PQ in my opinion. Is this a misused term in the hobby?image

Only when used in an ad. image

You can OWN a PQ coin, though.

You bet it is. It's also horribly abused and overused. I especially enjoy seeing it when the coin is over-graded.image

I think the First Strike posts will start to rival that of the great Golden Buffalo soon here. image

It sometimes seems that all what PQ means is "for sale."

If it's used on more than 10% of the seller's coins, it's probably mis-used. I think experienced collectors tend to have a slightly higher percentage of PQ coins because they tend to seek them out and keep them once they are attained.

Isn't PQ exactly like a grade that is given a coin ? Just a opinion from the person looking at the coin.

Yes it is way over used......In My Opinion.

PQ should be used on about the same percentage of coins as NGC's star designation, in my opinion. Probably less than 1-2% of coins are truely PQ coins, most sellers claim 50% of their coins are PQ. I laugh when I look on ebay and see PQ, usually it means barely made the grade.
Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

PQ is just another crap hype term. Overused and abused.

A collector should not pay a premium to current market on this basis unless
he knows how to grade or has great trust in the dealer. One is better off
looking for coins he likes that are dogs and will sell at a discount image.

Ownership used to be worth a couple grades but now it always moves a coin
to "just missed" the higher grade. Be careful especially if your motivation is
profit. There is already a lot of spread sometimes and you don't want to in-
crease it. If a collector stretches for a coin he likes then there is much less risk.

There are a lot more printed ads saying PQ than the number of "PQ" coins my eyes see at shows. Hmmmmm!!!!

    Yep overused.

  • If you look at the ads in Coin World or Numismatic News everything is "PQ" or "looks 65" when it really is a 63.

Because of "grade inflation" many pq coins from last year are "low end" or "just barely" coins this year..

Hell-freakin-yes it's overused and meaningless. Just like "full strike", "stunning", "choice", "gem", "undergraded", "Sure upgrade", etc..... image

Sometimes PQ really equals PU, if the math is done correctly...
