Grades popped - Hostess panels, Johnny-Pro

redlegsredlegs Posts: 936 ✭✭✭✭✭
My 6 free submissions were just graded today. I certainly can't complain with the results. The 1974 Johnny Pro Mike Schmidt in a 9 exceeded my expectations. I believe the 1975 Hostess panel with Pete Rose is the only one ever graded a 10. The 1975 Hostess Jim Palmer panel is the first one ever graded at all and it also got a 10.
I always try to make sure I send oversized cards for my free submissions.

    Congrats on the great grades

That is the second Johnny Pro Schmidt graded 9 now. Good stuff-

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Thanks Marc. I believe you own the PSA 10 of the 1974 Johnny Pro Mike Schmidt. I have no doubt that it will be a very long time before you see another one in that grade.

Phil, I still have the first PSA 9, too, that I was hoping to trade for a certain postcard you might recall! Perhaps one day - the Johnny Pro set is very nice. I have a Carlton in 9, too, and may grade out the rest of the set just so that I can have a neat, esoteric Phillies set.

Not like I'll be getting any Felin's Franks anytime soon ;-)

    Marc,
Yes, I do recall. I never say never on a possible future deal on the 1973 Schmidt postcard. I am having a hard time locating 1960's Johnny Bench team postcards. I did find a 1970 that I submitted and graded a 7.

How were your Hostess panels cut ? With scissors? Just wondering if the cuts had to be perfectly straight.

    Ripken,
I used a manual "guillotine" type of paper cutter. We have one at where I work and have been fairly successful at cutting these panels. You need to be patient and have a good eye. Make sure that you get as close to the lines at possible without cutting directly into them. You also need to be consistent in the length around the lines on each side of the panel.

The biggest problem you will find with collecting Hostess panels are the scuff marks and scratches that you always see on them. Since the Hostess boxes were stacked on top of each other in the grocery store they were very prone to this kind of damage.

  • What is the most sought after hostess card of the 70s?

My favorite panels have to be from the 1977 set. Panel #2 has Yastrzemski, Munson, and Bench. Panel #3 has Seaver, Rose, and Carew. I have panel #2 in a PSA 9 and panel #3 in a PSA 10.

For me, the most sought after are a couple of scarce panels from the 1975 set that you normally don't see (let alone in very nice shape). Panel #30 with Reggie Jackson, and Panel #40 with Bob Gibson. I believe these panels are more difficult to find today because they were distributed on the bottom of less popular Hostess products at the time.
