Ugliest PSA 10 ever???

As many of you know, I deal exclusively in 1993 Finest Refractors. I have had approximately 2,000 graded in the last year and this has to be the ugliest I've ever seen.

It is up on eBay right for a "buy it now" price of "only" $350!!! The first Sammy Sosa PSA 10 from this set sold on eBay for over $1,500 (seriously). That would have been about a year ago.

I've got a PSA 9(OC) with better centering (seriously). Ouch.....

Wasn't there a Ryan one that was even worse? I remember seeing it. The Topps logo was practically touching the bottom edge of the card.
  • Yea, I recall the card. It was a 1993 Finest PROMO Refractor of Ryan -- and it was PSA 9. It had about 95/5 centering.

What are the centering points on this card? Are the "shadows" counted? Not that it matters, but I'm curious.
Pick shadows, this card is worse than 60/40 t/b. Ignore "shadows", it's worse than 60/40 l/r.

Interesting that the pic name is sosa10tn9.jpg

Nothing surprises me anymore with PSA and 1993 Finest refractors.

It's ashame too, because the point of having PSA grade your refractors in the first place (besides making a killing on the Set Registry participants) was to have the best looking set from a product that was extremely condition sensitive.

It used to be, if you were buying the 93 refs, you wanted to be selective and pick the cards with clean surfaces, nice centering, sharp edges and cornering with no print lines. Now? Everyone is hoping to get the grader WCsports1 gets.

Believe me, NO ONE else gets that grader. I don't know how to, but I have seen probably 10 different 814/815... sets of submission from WCsports1 and it is all he gets.

    Sure it is.

But from a pure collector's point of view, as a person who remembers wandering the aisles at card shows back in 1993 and seeing the refractors for the first time and falling in love with the cards, it's hard not to feel bad over what the set has now become.

  • Where's Carol!?
  • I don't care what anyone says -- I've seen dozens of wcsports1's 814/815 cards and they are nowhere near as strictly graded as other cert. #s are. This 404.... of Sosa I posted above is an incredible outlier.
