Barber Halves with Varieties Question

OK Barber Halfanatics,

The 92-O Micro O is the only variety listed. Yet, Red Book lists the 07-S/S and we have seen multiple 92-P Triple Die Reverses in ANACS and NGC holders.

Why doesn't PCGS include these coins in the w/ Varieties set?

Don't know the answer but I have a 13-D/D in an ANACS holder I think (definitely not PCGS). I didn't really think anybody cared enough about the RPM's and such with the Barbers.

    Craig,

My 1907-S half dollar is the S/s variety ( not mentioned on the PCGS insert ) and it wouldn't bother me one bit if it were included in the "With Varieties" Set. I have not seen too many of the 1892 TDR's, guess I have not looked that closely.

I would assume that PCGS would holder varieties if requested (*) to do so but I have never submitted coins as such. Six years ago, when I purchased my 1905-O Micro O dime I had it submitted to NGC ( its an AU 58 ) as, at that time, I didn't think PCGS would list that variety; now, I believe that will designate this variety at PCGS.

(*) Has anyone tried submitting the 92 TDR or the 07-S/s to PCGS ?

I didn't know about the 13-D/D. I'm curious if anyone else has had luck with the TDR and S/S.

It seems to me that there are only a few better known varieties; the most famous, the micro o, the 1892 triple reverse die (I have seen one up close and for the life of me could not see the tripling effect), and the 1907 s/s. The 1909 inverted S is fairly common, and very visible as compared to other, more obscure varieties and most collectors do not know about it.

Barber halves for the most part do not have the many blatant varieties as seen in the other earlier series, and I presume that is why PCGS does not include them.

Other than the Micro O there just hasn't been that much publicity, therefore interest from collectors to want to include other varieties would be my guess.

There are a few out there and some kind of interesting. Just not the following.

But for us specialists it's maybe even more fun as the opportunity of fonding one may be easier.

I figure to with lower mintages, the number of dies used was probably only or two per year/mintmark.

Is anyone interested in having PCGS add the S/S and the TDR to the "With Varities" set? They might listen if we pool ourselves. PCGS did it with the Type I, II and III 1972-P Ikes.

Anymore talk on the 1898 micro "o" or the 1892 small "s"?

Speaking of the 1909 inverted S...............

Never really paid much attention to potential varities in the halves.....

Could be something kind of interesting to do, then again I am just looking to add pieces I need to my set period.....

  • Sometimes when I'm in the mood (with both the Barber quarters and halves), if I see a die break or die clash mark on a coin, I'll do a little research and see if it's been documented before. I'll usually use Breen's or the David Lawrence's books as references. This can make collecting Barbers a little more interesting.
