why the coin shows on tv tick me off!

I'm sick and tired of the coin shows on tv. This is because they prey on people who are easily talked into buying things. The other day they were selling 1879-S MS 64 morgans graded by PCGS for only $119 each!!!! I know this is a rip off because of the PCGS guide, and I managed to get mine for $40 a year ago on ebay. They always say that this is the cheapest your going to get these coins! Not so! Ebay has better deals then the coin shows! It's a bummer how it seems coins are being over rated! There honestly needs to be a boycott on coin show goods!

There was a post earlier about a dealer trying to sell ms65 1879-s morgans for about $250, it was brought to his attention that was way overpriced, he said he would buy any for around $200-225, so the collector brought him a whole box of them. His bluff was called. Dealers would do the same (not all of them) if they could, but their clientele is usually more educated.

(Above details may not be exactly right, but you get the point.)
Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

It is sad that people waste their money buying these coins on TV at inflated prices but it is their own fault. Whether it is coins, jewelry, new cars, and etc., you need to find out the going price before you purchase.

Note to self: Must find way to politely inform boss he got taken. Or just nod, blink and say "uh-huh". image

    BINGO!
  • I love watching those coin shows. I like to see how hard they push things like the well is about to dry up and this is their last chance ever.

That or I really like it when they have a limited amount of an item...say 1000 units and they make it sound like there is really only 1000 units of that item in the entire world. That always cracks me up.

Still think it is funny how they are selling the Gold Buffalo above the cost of what people can buy the proof from the mint. I think they want like $1100 or something and $2000 for the PF70 from NGC. That is probably the most identifiable rip scheme. Hey, maybe they are the ones buying em for $1300 on ebay and re-selling em image.

Oh, its great how they break down the payments into 4 and then act like the first payment for the product is such a good deal. Priced at $599 or 4 payments of $149.95. You can't find coins anywhere like this for $149.95...it just isn't done and don't miss this opportunity. lol. love it.

They make me mad because they prey on a public that doesn't know any better. You can say "caveat emptor" all you want, and I mostly agree, but they KNOW they are ripping people off AND they are guilty of overhyping the value and investment potential of what they sell. Together, they make this very, very unethical regardless of anu culpability the coin market-ignorant masses may share.

If they are going to talk about investment potential, seems to me they should have some kind of license as an investment advisor or a broker.

Amen... a PCGS MS64 Morgan for $100+ is a bargin compared to those "platinum plated nickels" o.O

I was stunned last week when I saw a letter to the editor in NN, where the writer defended the TV coin hucksters in response to an earlier letter complaining about how they rip off novice collectors. The writer said he regularly bought from the TV shows, thought they had excellent service and if that made him a "novice collector", well, he'd proudly wear that label to avoid dealing with the snooty people like the earlier letter writer.

So here's a guy who reads NN, a newspaper that regularly carries ads for the same products offered on the TV shows, yet is glad to pay wildly inflated prices for the same exact item he could buy from an advertiser for much less. I didn't get that at all.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • I hate those guys. They offer polished XF/AU 1921 Morgans for $75 saying that they are original BU. What crap! I was watching it once and they had a full set of PR70 American Silver Eagles all certified by ICG (it might have been PCGS, I don't remember) and you could have those set for the low price of $40,000.

Exactly. That is why someone could sell used toilet paper on ebay.

Uh-Perhaps the writer of this letter is an employee of the show?

I don't generally watch these infomercials but isn't this mail fraud or do they craft the sales pitch to cover this?

If it was PCGS AND it included the 1995-W, that probably wasn't a bad price.
